Old farts like me prefer music played by people, rather than created by computer programmers. See same response for any kind of hip hop or techno music. A great musician died this weekend; Duck Dunn's work with Al Jackson Jr. defined a "rhythm section" and what it could do to make people move. Programming a bass line and a drum machine track just doesn't cut it for cranky old guys.

What actually happens during a "concert" by a band like this one? Is it just flashing lights while a guy sits behind a turntable, or do they have live musicians to play the parts?

If you like electronic music I'd strongly suggest picking up an xm or Sirius radio. The electronic dance channel has shows by tiesto, diplo, pretty lights, Paul oakenfold, a weekly George Acosta set from one of his shows capped off with 24 hours of arminn van burin (spl) a state of Sunday's (includes an above and beyond mix for an hour every Sunday). Skrillex drops in from time to time with a mothership mix. Benni benassi has a weekly show. As well as 4 different top 20 shows throughout the week. Need to tone it down the chill channel has a great selection of acid jazz, trip hop and just plain chill electronic. I do believe tiesto launched his own channel but I think you have to pay extra for it.

Edm also play the miami music fest main sets live and all the shows I mentioned previously generally have live shows broadcast for landmark shows ie AB had Gareth emery, kayu and Albert and someone else live in Budapest for their 300th. Awesome radio station.

Jim morrison predict back then that music would be created this way (sampling and doing production, editing, modifying those samples). Pretty sure he's a legit musician. I do know of producers who have live bands play with them. The roots (hip hop) herbaliser (trip hop/acid jazz) and dj greyboy had the greyboy allstars (good jazz)

Yes it takes talent to play an instrument/sing. It also takes talent to know what sounds good from a much larger spectrum of sounds than what a five piece band can put together.

I like all music but forms o country so I'm not knocking it.

Think of it like a good cinematographer (spelling wtf?), he doesn't necessarily create a landscape for you to view as much as he uses angles and frames it in a way to make it appealing. There is talent there, but not the same talent as say a painter who literally creates the image with a physical skill.

I've spent a lot of time in the electronic music scene over the years, and as such have many friends who are DJs. Some of them just mix tracks and don't actually create anything (they're just in it for the tail lol) But I know a few who legitimately make the entire song; every sound, every melody, they are the entire band. You definitely need musical talent to do it, and it takes a lot of time and effort to create just one song. The computer is essentially a new instrument, think of it that way.

When performing they do it just like any other musician would, and play the song from scratch. Since it's a little more complicated than playing one instrument at a time, they might have a few small things set up beforehand so it doesn't sound like crap. But they definitely don't just hit play.

I'm sorry to be one of those awful music snobs, but Benny Benassi, Tiesto...Skrillex?! Their music makes me want to hurt people lol. Please tell me you don't listen to them! :p

Tiesto makes you want to hurt people? Seriously, his stuff is rather melodic, skrillex and Benassi I can understand, as the reason I listen to those is the same reason I listen to slayer, 3 inches of blood. Electronic dance isn't my prefered unless I want higher tempo. My preference is the xm chill channel, but driving x country for 3x14hour days it's a bad idea to listen to relaxing music ya dig. Pretty lights does an awesome show. I generally listen to just those two channels whoever is playing a better song at that time. Lol better not listen to Dada Life either.

Nobody likes a snob or an elitist other than other snobs or elitists.

And I was just listing who has shows on that station (forgot Hardwell, and a few others) Paul Oakenfold's voice alone actually makes me want to punch babies, and not in the "oh how cute he's punching babies" kinda way but the OMG MONSTER!!! There is an absolutly terrible drumline/minimalist crap show as well as some josh wink I cant stand.

I never knew there was a cute way to punch babies...but...alright :fear: lol.

I'm half-teasing, listen to whoever you like lol. Although Slayer and Benny Benassi can't even be compared!!! I like the loud stuff too and I'll listen to bands like Slayer when I'm in the mood for it. Benny Benassi is just annoying and Skrillex literally makes my ears bleed. Literally. It's gross. :p Skrillex did a collaboration with Korn and it made me cry.

Okay so maybe I'm just a teensy weensy bit a music snob :p But I'd rather be that than someone who listens to Skrillex :D

In 1977 Cat Stevens friend gave him a drum machine and a synthesizer and he came up with this gem, "Was dog a doughnut". An instant classic, although Stevens had no idea until he appeared on Jimmy Fallon last year and Fallons house band, The Roots, mentioned to him that it's considered the first ever 'electro' record. The 12" Single sold for about $700 on ebay recently.

I'm determined to find some electronic music that Hank will like... I will succeed! Maybe not with this one, but play this publicly and people boogie.

lol It makes me want to hurt people because it sucks so badly! :p Just teasing ya. Tiesto I could probably handle more than the other two, but I don't particularly like any of it. Skrillex is the worst though. People should get off with murder by saying they were listening to Skrillex beforehand :p

Comparing Tiesto to Skrillex is like comparing Led Zepplin to Nickellback, i.e. no comparsion. Listening to Nickelback non-stop at a camping trip (made the mistake of trusting a friend to bring some decent tunes) last summer made me wish I had burst ear drums...

He was at the Commodore, I wanted to go so bad...

ha that's pretty funny, to be fair, I've never paid for any skrillex and only know two songs (bangerang - pretty good, I want to kill everyoone - pretty bad) plus his mothership mixs. Hell I dont pay for any music (well I bought piano man off itunes awhile ago). Lol didn't tiesto suck so bad he got to play the olympics in greece? My preferences are more inline with something like Morecheeba, Greyboy, acid jazzy stuff. EDM just has much nicer upbeat for when I'm in an active mood, and pretty lights does a great mix show on the station.

I know Avicii did it as well, but I like this.

Not sure if your comparison telling me not to compare is comparing Tiesto to Led Zepplin but there's no comparison :p Sorry, just bein a dick! lol.

I have higher standards than the Olympics, clearly :p Just kiddin. You're takin me too seriously! I like to make fun of people's musical tastes and expect people to make fun of mine. All in good fun. But agreed on some of the others you mentioned.

lol no worries, I take no offense whatsoever, I used to be one of the worst book snobs around lol. More acid jazz/trip hop

Simply because my neighboor in camp has now repeated "copperhead road" for the seventh time since I started youtubbing music I like.

Actually, as a music lover of all kinds, I have heard a lot of electronic music I have at least found interesting. This is an example from David Pritchard, decades ago. He was a DJ in Toronto (the kind that played records on the radio) who made music as a hobby.

I have always loved classic Jamaican dub from the likes of Lee Perry and King Tubby, where the guy with the mixing console is the musician (but he is fucking around with real music on analog tapes, so I'm not sure it counts as "electronic").

I kind of liked some of the "ambient" music that Brian Eno once did, and could see what he was doing.

I have enjoyed tracks more recently (that is, the last couple of decades) from bands like Massive Attack, Morcheeba, Portishead and others of that ilk, but could never enjoy it in album-length doses.

There is probably an old fogey element to it for me too -- I also fail to get enthused about most "indy" bands that them young folks seem to like....it just seems like warmed-over versions of things I've heard before, only watered down. I also know that if things I have missed are any good, they will stand the test of time and still be there in a few years and will likely come to my attention eventually. I am still waiting for that to happen with rap...it's only been around for 30 some years, so maybe it will grow on me....
