Just wondering the general thoughts my fellow perbs feel about both companies.

I am going to change from shaw to telus, thought I would ask what people thought of both companies.

Thanks to all of you in advance.

Shaw has to have the worst after-sale service of any company in Canada. I remember once when my internet was down, and I called them up: they said they would have a repair tech Tuesday, which I thought was the following day ... then they clarified no, not that Tuesday but the one following!

Good luck with them - their main business model focus is how to shovel a gazillion $$'s into their founders bank account. Telus isn't much better. IMHO it's better to go with relatively upstart companies where you can talk to a real person and not go through a miarid, mind numbing, automated talk experience to finally talk to someone. Lightspeed for internet, Virgin/Yak for phone, anybody but Shaw for cable.

Same just happened to me. Last week the cable went out, and I just got them in yesterday to fix it.

I'd say it's not a lot of difference. Both are a joke when it comes to customer service. I've had run-in's with both and have found that Shaw is more willing to make up for screw ups or bad service then Telus. Entwhistle is one of the five top paid CEO's in B.C. and top 10 in Canada and he's got the attitude and arrogance to go with it. Unforunately it's trickled down to Telus staff as well.

I actually just got off the phone with Telus regarding a change to my phone service.

The lady was delightful and went above and beyond to double check my charges and found that she could save me some money and throw in some free channels. All I initially wanted to do was add a $5/mo. service and I ended up with a crapton of free channels (and she told me the date to call in before to cancel them before I begin getting billed for them) and saved me $16/mo as well.

I've heard people having crappy service from Telus, but they have been stellar compared to the grumpy service I used to get from Shaw.

Maybe I'm just lucky.

I switched to Telus a couple years ago. Came home to TV being down, phoned them and within 10 minutes had the tech in Edmonton on line and fixed. Pretty impressed

Both suck but Shaw takes 1st place for the worst in customer support, call-back, customer retention and the list goes on.
Its indicative of the "humongous bank".

Last month, my Shaw cable/internet went down due to a home construction accident down the block and it took me 13+ hours over 4 phone calls to get through and resolve it. Cable/internet was reinstated 5 days later.

Sigh.

I have always found Shaw customer service to be VASTLY superior to Telus. Whenever I've called Shaw they always stayed on the line until the problem was resolved. Telus could use the slogan "We Don't Give a Rat's Ass". Telus has always taken the approach-it's your problem and I don't give a fuck.

I just switch to Telus and it is awesome!

I used my iphone to do a network speed test, and Telus is triple the speed than Shaw. TV dvr is way better and more intuitive.

Telus is cheaper ($80 with HBO pack) and I got a free HP Laptop that is actually pretty good.

Bear in mind Telus signs you up for a 3 year contact. If after a year or so goes by and you become disgruntled with their service, you will have to pay to get out of their clutches.

Shaw you can walk away from today if you want to because they do not have contracts.

I have had both and neither are up there in terms of customer service.

I have friends back east and they complain about their ISP's, Cable, Phone companies as much as we do. Appears that Telecom discontent is a National thing.

I have my net and tv with Shaw, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Used to have their digital phone as well and it was great. Never had any problems with my bill or services and I am a happy long term customer

The 3 year contract isn't a big thing - certainly not a major issue the way Shaw would like it to be. Everyone has contracts for their car, their cell phone, their home.

What rules is service, reliability and price

Since I switched to Telus for phone, tv and internet at the end of August - I've had no problems at all.

No more 4 hours on hold with Shaw
No more having to wait at home for a Shaw technician that doesn't come. (the Telus technician phoned to confirm that I was home and say that they would be there in 30 minutes)
$80 a month savings over the almost exactly the same package of services.

So - no contract = 4 hour hold times and $80 a month more in cost

I'll accept the 3 year contract.
Agree with most of the above except the pricing. I had a long consultation session with a Telus rep trying to win me over, our conclusion was that after the promotional price expires, I would actually pay about 10-15% more to Telus to get almost the same package of services that I am getting from Shaw (TV incl. movie channels, Chinese channels and HD plus package, Basic digital home phone, and Extreme internet).

You apparently ignored this comment al.

Both in business and in personal life I have had both. I have left both and I am now back with Shaw for several reasons most of which were performance, support, cost etc.

I haven't bothered to read your savvy investor thread. Must be something about Telus you like other than their apparent excellent service.

BTW, I sell to both corporations for their system related work. I have nothing but respect for their engineering, program management and purchasing operations. My beef with both, mainly Telus has been their lack of support, we will get to it when it's convenient to us attitude.

If I have had a problem with support from Shaw, I have always opted for their call back service. Not once have I waited more than 45 minutes for a return call.

You know you are in the midst of a honeymoon with them and they want you to be happy. Trust me, 18 to 24 months down the road you will look back upon this thread and shake your head.

Shaw and Telus aren't the only big players in town; there is company called Novus http://www.novusnow.ca/. Friend had this and i thought they were better than both Shaw and Telus but, the only issue is if their in your area and you live in a high rise residential building.
