Magic Johnson

20 years after, Magic Johnson has become one of the most influential and well-connected celebrities in LA. For short, he has the JUICE in the City of Angels. If you need something done in the city, he's the guy to go to. In other parts of the city, you actually have to pass through him. Plus, he's behind the move to bring back an NFL team to LA. He sold his 10% stake with the Lakers and all his Starbucks franchises more than a year ago in preparation for this business endeavor.

I wonder if he would have if it wasn't for his money ?
2 major advantages, 1 it was caught really early (blood test for an insurance policy happened to catch it), 2 he had the money to be able to dedicate himself full time to his health care in the early stages, meet with doctors, take great meds... very fortunate indeed.

Similar story for Christopher Reeve sealing with his paralysis... he was fortunate to have health coverage from both actors guild and directors guild as well as the money to battle the insurance companies for his life giving care.

If you ever get a chance, watch the movie "And the Band Played On". It's basically the story of AIDS from the earliest cases in Africa up to and including the announcements from famous people that they were HIV positive.

Are there other famous & rich people who's gotten hiv and lived 15+ years?

Magic probably realized that there's a bigger chance that Larry Bird can fly than having an NFL team in LA with a stadium paid for by taxpayers money as in most sports venues. Geez! the Occupy Movement missed that one. So now Magic is going after the Los Angeles Dodgers which is one of the best brand names in sports. Judging by the number of groups interested which includes Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. However, Magic's group which is back by the finances of Guggenheim does have a fairly good chance as well. The Dodgers is an easy sell as compared to lets say the Maloof's Sacramento Kings where NBA brokers have reached as far as the Far East to look for buyers. The Dodgers could challenge once again with stable ownership as it did during Manny Ramirez and Joe Torre's time.

According to his doctors and himself he takes "everyday Joe" medication.

Wether you believe that or not though....
Yes, they are gonna announce to the world there is a cure for AIDS!? Or MJ didn't tell his doctor about his secret medication.

"The example is Timothy Ray Brown of San Francisco, the first person in the world apparently cured of AIDS. His treatment isn't practical for wide use, but there are encouraging signs that other approaches might someday lead to a cure, or at least allow some people to control HIV without needing medication every day."

"For now, the focus remains on preventing new infections. With recent progress on novel ways to do that and a partially effective vaccine,"we're starting to get the feel that we can really get our arms around this pandemic," Fauci said.

"In the USA though, newly diagnosed patients have a life expectancy only a few months shorter than people without HIV. Modern drugs are much easier to take, and many patients get by on a single pill a day.

Magic's planned foray into Dodgers baseball scared the shit out of the LA Angels owner for market domination and the latter throws $ 330 Million for Pujols and CJ Wilson. Imagine giving Pujols A-Rod bucks of $ 250 Million for 10 Years and Wilson $ 77 Million. Another team trying to buy the World Series. The new look Miami Marlins are even worse, they're throwing away money that they don't even have but based on expected revenues from their new digs. Of course, there's lot of competition entertainment-wise in the city from Lebron and Wade's Heats to football. Well, they better fill up the seats if not they'll be called the Subprime Marlins. Plus, the last time the Marlins threw away money and won the World Series, they went on a firesale a few years after. :) :)

Magic Johnson is the MAN in LA. He could actually make a good Mayor of the City of Angels but the latter now is a Latino city and chances of a non-Latino becoming Mayor is similar to that of the Flames winning the Stanley Cup. :) Personally, I'd prefer the investment group led by Steve Garvey and Orel Hershiser to win the Dodgers bid. Those two baseball legends especially Garvey exemplifies the typical Dodger Blue.

So Magic Johnson gets his own TV Network similar to Oprah's OWN. For Comcast and private equity to invest hundreds of millions on you, you gotta have the JUICE.

Magic Johnson backed by Guggenheim billions buys the LA Dodgers. Comcast gives him a TV Network and now he gets the Dodgers. Yups! Magic has the JUICE!! If the Dodgers are worth $ 2 Billion, then how much would the Yankees be worth??

Here and There
Just looked at a forbes article that had to dodgers at 1.4b and the Yankees at 1.85b. This article was written pre new Yankee stadium (2009). The rate of growth for the dodgers was much higher than the Yankees, but the article mention the new stadium would impact the figures positively. Yes tv money is a huuuuge contributer to the overall worth.
