What does that mean? All he was asking for was a website that he had heard about...
I think he means all it takes to being a Canadian is joining an ENGLISH speaking escort review site...who knew that's what it means to be Canadian.

I know! Who knew? I mean, last I checked, Canada was proud to be a cultural mixing pot. Speaking English was never a requirement to become Canadian last I checked.
It used to be, or French.

All I can say is I wish I were fluent in Korean/Mandarin/Thai/Japanese/Vietnamese/Tagalog as well as a few other languages of the far east....cuz I think asian gals are uber hot.On the other hand I will say that English is the most Fu&$e* up language on the the planet.....we have words that sound the same but are spelled differently and have different contexts.

It's interesting to see that when foreigners do not speak English actually irritates the locals!

When the British were colonising Hong Kong, Singapore, and South Africa, do they speak the local language there? NO

When the Multi-national American companies send their employees overseas, do these workers speak the language of that country? NO

Many immigrants come here to get better education or better salaries, not give up their culture.

Ummm, yeah, that’s what it’s all about.

Or maybe it’s that I pass by stores every day that have signs in Chinese, no English. I no longer bother to enter as I know that they don’t speak English.

Or maybe it’s about how when I go to shop at Superstore, and ask if they carry a certain product, they don’t understand the question. Their English is not conversational.

It was brought up in a previous thread that it’s the OLDER GENERATION that doesn’t try to fit in, but we all know that Textbook is pretty young.

It annoys me to see these young generations choose activities that exclude other Canadians.

But I take back my comment. Not because I don’t mean it, but because I don’t want to see another anti-Chinese thread-gone-wild.
High five dude, couldn't agree more

And I'm saying that as an immigrant myself.

US->melting pot+assimilation
Canada->multiculturalism+ethnic self-segregation

Having lived in both, I can attest to the problems of the latter. Yet I'm stuck here, as I can't take American politics and rednecks. (BTW, didn't mean to imply I'm American, just that I've lived there)

As someone whose native language is not English, and has studied a couple of different languages, English is definitely my favorite language. I switched to thinking in it within two years of moving to an English-majority country. And, with a few exceptions, English literature is the best, which is a nice bonus.

Imposing one's culture onto others is one of the rights of conquest. Looking at the BC government, and even Vancouver's city council, looks to me that Westerners are still holding the rein. Until such a time as the Asians take over, one is completely justified in complaining about disrespect for the ruling culture's standards and traditions.
Immigrants in Canada integrate into society far less than in the US. When I'm there, people tell me they're American. When I'm in Vancouver, people tell me they're Chinese/Ukranian/whatnot.
A nation is not a place you take advantage of for financial gain, for fuck's sake! Simply paying your taxes is a necessary but NOT sufficient condition for being Canadian.
When Kennedy famously said, "ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country", he did preface it with "My fellow Americans"--but that is no excuse for the citizens of all other nations to ignore it. And so, my fellow Canadians....

PS and if you only want to be Canadian because you make more money here/feel more comfortable here/taking advantage of XYZ benefits Canada provides...
...GTFO!!

My brother-in-law lived in Hong Kong for 8 yrs as an ex-pat pilot for a large airline. He now speaks about 15 words in Cantonese. I'm a little disappointed in him. He missed a great opportunity.
i sort of agree with you and i sort of don't. a missed opportunity yes, but i've been a passenger on those airlines when the pilots have addressed the cabin on the intercom, in a very comforting sounding expat voice. I rested very easy for the rest of those flights. in contrast i've been on a few where the pilot didn't speak any english at all and they handled those airliners as though they were street racing, we make it, but i made a mental note about ex-pat pilots

however, i've always tried to learn the language wherever i go. sometimes it was hilarious, sometimes it was not so hilarious, but it was always rewarding. i must say though that the oriental languages were the hardest to 'hear' for my anglo ears

This is really a bad attitude. I think foreigners come to Canada just for better salaries is nothing bad, it's a win-win situation for both parties. The immigrant workers get better pay than their home country, and the Canadian firms can hire workers with cheaper wage, Canada has more work force and therefore higher GDP, so what's wrong with it? Do anyone live in Canada have to love Canada deep in their hearts, no.

I lived in South America for a year, with the intention of living there. First thing I did was learn the language in a school environment.....not find other english speakers to hang with. It's about respect.
Here I have to agree with you. It's more respectful to learn the native language if you are living in a new place. When you go to a new place, it's better learn their language and adopt some aspects of the native lives, however, there is no need to completely to assimilate yourself into the new culture and think you are actually the native citizens of that place.

For the record English is a second language for me and I immigrated to Canada as a young adult.

Let me simplify this for everyone. In Canada there are two official languages. Mandarin, Cantonese, Hindi, Gujarati, Arabic, Persian etc etc are not any of them. For civil society to function and people be at their best productivity they need to be able to C-O-M-M-U-N-I-C-A-T-E. A Turk and an Armenian speaking to each other in their own language can't really get over centuries of ethnic and cultural hositilities.

Having distinct and unique cultural identities enriches us as a society but its all meaningless if everyone is in their own corner speaking their own language to people of the same race or colour. Its stupid really and defeats the whole purpose of coming out here.

If someone doesnt at least want to put the effort needed to learn our common language of communication then yes please get the fuck out!

This is totally AWAY from the topic! If you don't want to help, go somewhere, not just sarcasm or criticism, get a life!
