So, the money hungry ICBC says, if you want to let someone else drive once in a while, you have to pay extra.

British Columbians who let a friend or family member occasionally drive their car will be on the hook for a new fee next year.

The measure, which is being labelled as a “cash grab” by critics, was included in an ICBC rate overhaul approved by the BC Utilities Commission on Friday.

The new $50 fee is called “unlisted driver protection,” and the public insurer is recommending that anyone who hands the keys over to a driver not listed on their policy to buy it.

I guess NDP is trying to make up for revenue it lost by removing tolls.

I have absolutely no problem with this. It is seems reasonable that people who drive a car that does not belong to them will therefore not be as familiar with the vehicle and would therefore be more likely to have an accident. Also, too many parents allow their children to drive their cars without purchasing extra coverage. This will help recover costs in these cases as well.

I see no problem, either. If people lend their car to other people and that driver causes an accident, often the owner is penalized, but not the driver, who has to prsue them.
This should cover that.

Only the guys who looted ICBC's profits think it's a csh grab.

The problem I see is that basically everyone is going to have to get this because even if you don't loan your car as a rule, you can't predict what crazy unforeseen thing might happen and if that results in an accident you're SOL. May as well have left it built in.

Also I wonder if valets count?

The #5 highway tollbooth was a money maker for the provincial government, someone complained about it and they tore it down..... Some poor asshole going from Vancouver to Kamloops didn't want to pay 10.00. Anyone notice the condition of that road now??
Oh geeze isn't that why there is tax on fuel in Canada to pay for the upkeep of the roads. Hows that going (into general revenue).....

The article says "The Crown corporation says there will be exemptions for extraordinary situations such as medical emergencies.". I think the situation you describe would not require the $50 coverage. Article says it is for people who loan car out less than 12 times a year. What kind of coverage do you need if you loan out more than 12 times a year?
