"Wright told the judge during sentencing she was relieved when police raided the brothel last year. Wright says she was sexually abused as a child and witnessed domestic violence, according to the AP. "

I would never want to minimize the real-life trauma that sexual abuse of children and witnessing domestic violence might have on a young life. But it sure makes for an interesting defence in this case...

I believe it is the usual "please don't send me to jail because it was all someone else's fault" defence.

I wish there was a "like" button on this board, because this comment sums up my feelings towards her defence.

As PlayfulAlex noted, I don't want to trivialize the impacts of sexual violence on women, but it's interesting and problematic how quickly prostitution is linked to a sad history of sorts. Single parent household, violence, chicken pocks, you name it, mainstream culture insists that something terrible must have caused a formerly good girl to fall from grace! This is usually done against the will of working girls, to discredit their agency in choosing to engage in sex work. So I have to admit that I take issue hearing such an infantilizing narrative invoked to reduce her accountability in the case.

Still, completely outrageous to see consenting adults put in jail for having a good time. Oh well!

She shouldn't be charged for prostitution but maybe for filming customers without their knowledge or consent. It never ceases to amaze me how puritanical and backward the US is about prostitution.

wonder what the over/under of her ending up in porn will be. job prospects won't be that good when she gets out and she has that 60 g's to repay. having seen a couple of the vids, she is hot so she may go the amy fisher route to make some quick coin.

I couldn't have put it better Nathalie! What other defense could this poor woman use? I say poor strictly because of the idiotic prostitution laws in her state, and in much of the US. I felt terrible for her, as well as for her clients, when that whole case blew up. Idiotic law-making at its best :/

It will be interesting to see how it plays out as well. Considering that a lot of the busts are rationalized to be due to 'saving' sps from having to do the work, it makes it a tough thing to prosecute that victim, isn't it? can they justify the trial and charges in the first place if they play up the victim angle and the saving her from herself angle, and everything else that goes along with all sps are victims and need saving, and that's why these laws are enforced angle?
