No, the cellist, not an SP! A friend treated me to a VSO concert Monday eve that featured this great artist. I hadn't been to a concert in some time, and I have to say I've missed it, without even realizing it. As for Mr. Ma, he was charming, entertaining, mesmerizing, and wonderfully talented. If you ever get the chance to see him perform, you should do so - at least IMHO.

Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. That's where the fancy, hoity toities get all gussied up in their tuxs's and gowns and bling-bling and sip champagne and martinis and bump elbows with Vancouver's elite I think?
Not so, Miss Alex. True in other cities, but in this one it's not uncommon for the theatre/symphony goers to show up in the same gear they just wore to the gym. I make it a point to get "hoity toitied" up regardless and my dates have been good enough to get dolled up as well, but it's the minority that do so. I know of very few formal events in Vancouver. I'd actually appreciate any information regarding any that I might not know of.

You just missed it
I love going to the VSO

I have been to the VSO in jeans before and it's quite casual. I have also been to a few Holly Cole concerts where she plays with the VSO. Both the regular VSO concerts and the accompaniment type concerts are very entertaining and I wish I had more opppurtunity to go.

Saddly the season will be over in a few short weeks. This weekend is the 40-50's swing pops concert that I always wanted to see. Some other interesting concerts coming up as well.

VSO Calendar

Now this is making me want to go this Friday! If I only had someone to go with...

Here's my vote in support of what Jodie and Travel Guy are saying. Try it, Shari - you just might like it (you ARE adventurous , aren't you?). I'll see you at the Orpheum one of these times, I hop, Jodie?

Gad, who'd of thought my posting that I liked hearing a cellist would have provoked such a discussion???!!

Alex, Jodie, Julie, et al. I'd love to take you all to the VSO, only it would have to be somewhere other than the Orpheum theatre. They sit us crips off by ourselves - I had the company of a dentist who'd had a stroke and was paralyzed on one side. He's also had his left leg amputed mid thigh. I joked with him that he had an advantage over me - if he wanted to stretch that leg, all he need do is unstrap the prosthesis (we were quite cramped)! He thought that was hillarious! However, it's the kind of gallows humour that only gimps can share....

No, if I am in the company of gorgeous women as their escort for the evening, I at least want to sit with them!

And for those that cared (I've lost my program so can't be specific). The composers Dvorak, Heiden, and one other were represented in the selection of pieces. I'm not big into classical (I rarely listen to it at home), but enjoyed the live performance.
