Why not?

It's the same as when CBC did "The Greatest Canadian" last year. It is just a mildly diverting popularity contest with no solid agreed upon definition for greatest.

Canada, here are your Top 10 Greatest Canadians, in order of votes received:
# Name
1 Tommy Douglas
2 Terry Fox
3 Pierre Elliott Trudeau
4 Sir Frederick Banting
5 David Suzuki
6 Lester B. Pearson
7 Don Cherry
8 Sir John A. Macdonald
9 Alexander Graham Bell
10 Wayne Gretzky

To be honest I don't beleive it either. But the public has spoke.

Number 6 W... I think he has potential to be in the same legue as Ronnie, Abe, and FDR.....but it is too soon to make that judgement.

1 Ronald Reagan
2 Abraham Lincoln
3 Martin Luther King
4 George Washington
5 Benjamin Franklin
6 George W Bush
7 Bill Clinton
8 Elvis Presley
9 Oprah Winfrey
10 Franklin D Roosevelt

Ronald Reagan and his right wing administration had done much ill to Americans and the world with his: funding death squads in Central America, mass public spending in private sectors resulting in mass profits for the fortune 500 and a corresponding increase in the working poor, homelessness and poverty, Union busting, decrease in public education.

I enjoyed Reaganomics! What incredible entertainment that was!!!!

And this man single handedly destroyed Soviet Communism with his thunderous words, "Misturr Gorbachoff, knock down that wwwalllll". Words the world will never forget, and let's be sure Americans don't forget them and credit the Gipper and the Republican party for defeating Communism. By the way, who's Zbignew Zebrerszinski? NEVERMIND SHUT UP! YOU'RE NOT A PATRIOT YOU COMMIE PINKO FLAG BURNING LIBERAL!

But as LD said, the American public has spoken... perhaps much to his chagrin. Though it's funny how it often reflects whatever was last to get significant coverage in the mass media. Thats OKAY tho! Hmmmm now who among the disgusting left leaning Hollywood celebrities can we get to run against that lesbian Hilary Clinton, a la Schwartznegger. Maybe Sylvester Stallone? Cuz if you've been in the movies, you're an assured win when Americans vote!

Pass me the Freedom Fries please.

No historic perspective

Yeah, I saw this. It just proves the point of George Santayana when he said, "those who do not remember history are condemned to repeat it."

America's have this peculiar ability to not remember, understand, or have any sense of history. If we did, would we be in Iraq right now, which is going to go down in history as the Vietnam of this generation of Americans. How can you invade a foreign country and then try to force the citizens of that country to be free...on your terms. Stupid is not a strong enough word to describe this phenomena of the American people.

The Discovery channel website has a list of the entire top 100. It amazes me, although it really shouldn't, that there is not a single Supreme Court Chief Justice on the entire list. Great, foresighted men like Earl Warren, Warren Burger, John Jay and many others, have been totally ignored by clueless Americans. Yet Elvis Pressly not only makes the list, he is in the top 10.

Its a shameful thing.

W, first let me say I watch your speech from Ft Bragg. Once again you have demonstrated your resolve in defeating the terrorist and keeping them pre-occupied

I could not help but notice how much respect you received from the soldiers you spoke to and how proud they were to have a Commander in Chief that does not back down from a fight or beg OBL to please leave us alone.

Just think the American people have placed you in great company and that is an indicator of how much Americans appreciate the war you have fought to this point.

I knew you read up on Reaganomics and you are applying the same theories during your administration. They worked well for Ronnie and they have worked well for you.

I don’t think you need to worry about Hil. We have seen what she is really like and where she would take this country. Hell we would be just the 11 province (or is that 12? Is Nunavut a province yet?). Hillary won’t even get out of the Dems primary.

You are driving the left crazy with your success. You will be to the 21st century what Reagan was to the 20th century. (Even American Male with agree with me on that statement).

The US is truly a blessed country, just when we need a leader to step forward one does. It has been our history and is what has made America great.

Thanks again and keep up the good work.

A Conservative Citizen of the United States

Reagan is number 1....hmm, the end of civilization is nearer than we think.

Here is a link to another view of numero uno The guy was an actor, and B grade at that. Towards the end he could barely remember his lines.

Here's a teaser from the above link:
The fox, as has been pointed out by more than one philosopher, knows many small things, whereas the hedgehog knows one big thing. Ronald Reagan was neither a fox nor a hedgehog. He was as dumb as a stump.

Reagan

I think I would put him at about 10 as opposed to 1, but his intelligence was very underrated....he did after all kill the Evil Empire (Gorbachev gets the credit for this, but people conveniently forget Reagan intended to end the Cold War and bring down the Iron Curtain whereas Gobachev attempted to reinvigorate communism but succeeded only in hastening its decline...It makes me think if you come across as smart -Gorbachev- versus actually being smart but looking a bit silly -Reagan- then people give you more credit than you deserve....and remember there is more than 1 sort of intelligence...)

Oh, yeah, Reagan got some peasants killed in El Salvador and Nicaraugua, but this was nothing compared to what the world would have seen if the reds won the Cold War..I can accept this.

Also, there's no way that George Patton should be out of the top 10...I also would have replaced Clinton with Carter...Jimmy Carter just had bad luck...he was one of the best men to be Prez...democrat or not....FDR sb #1...ya I said it you f-in liberals...FDR #1...go ahead and gloat.

Christ...they might as well have included PeeWee Herman. But... the people making the list are the same ones that voted for those lightweights included. And no, Bill Clinton doesn't deserve to be there either.

The Canadian list is brilliant in comparison.

I did some research on the Canadian list when it came out. For the most part, I agree Hank. Tommy Douglas was a true humanitarian and Lester B Pearson was a genuine hero.

But Don Cherry???? He was also in the top 10, you'll remember. He's a hockey commentator. And was on the list because....

Only #6? You've got to be kidding! Hey, what about Larry Flynt?[/IMG]
#66 on this list would have been way too high for that redneck moron. Take a good close look at the Mission Accomplished sign and remember that another 1500 Americans have been killed in Iraq since that day.

Mission Accomplished by rosy, red ass!

George Bush is the moron that put my country into Iraq and we will be there for years to come. He has created a new Vietnam for the current generation of young Americans to enjoy.

Ask the mothers of dead American soldiers if THEY think he's #6!!!

I remember back in high school reading an article during Reagan's second term, during the Iran-Contra hearings when everybody was talking about Reagan being senile. The writer found a bunch of signs from Reagan's first term that he wasn't all there. For example, at a conference of city mayors in Washington DC, when Reagan was introduced to the then mayor of Washington, he asked how things were in his city.

As to defeating communism, Reagan spent heavily on the military(and I'm sure military contractors weren't supporters). The Soviets spent money they didn't have trying to keep up until communism imploded. I've read that experts never expected communism to crumble the way it did, but Reagan figured it out? Or did he just get lucky?

From "Back To The Future"

Doc Brown: "Who's President of the United States in 1984?"

Marty McFly: "Ronald Reagan."

Doc Brown: "Ronald Reagan - the ACTOR? So Who's Vice President....Jerry Lewis?"

and later.....as Marty shows Doc Brown the camcorder from the future:

Doc Brown: "And this is remarkable....a portable television studio. No wonder your President's an actor, he's gotta look good on television!"
