I had a day off from work today and decided to spend some time with my old friend who recently (last week) moved here from BC. I wanted to take him out to lunch show him around the lower Mainland. Since the good BC folks here on Perb helped me with my raw Sushi phobia. I figured why not introduce this to my friend, he should like it- hopefully. I picked him up mid morning for lunch and headed out to Burnaby for Chinese. He loves Chinese food, but not keen on Sushi (he never tried it and not too crazy about the raw fish thing).
We arrived at some strip mall with a parking lot, the lot was pretty full and busy.
I was waiting to get through, but this Chinese girl (possibly Hong Kong) was taking the longest time to park her BMW. No kidding here, but 2 minutes passed and there was a long line up of cars behind me. I was thinking how hard could it be to park? I wanted to to get out of my car and offer to park it for her, but I decided I'll give her another minute. Well 2 minutes passed, I peered out of my car and looked at the driver and her boyfriend. The young punk gave me the finger!!!!!
WTF? All I did was I peered out of the car door window and to gime them some sign that she's taking a long time to park.
I was stunned and I did not say anything,but why the finger?
Later the anger started to set in and I wanted to say something racial, like "go back to your country" (sorry for offending any Asians here- I do have Asian friends).
I just had to get this off my chest, I spent the whole day feeling like sh@#. It just ruined my day with my friend.

should have just fingered him back and then shrugged the whole thing off like a cloudy day. People don't give two fukks about each other anymore and, and it seems to show at every oppertunity it can....I've noticed.

More often than not I just do and say nothing, best to just shake your head and think thank god that stupid fukk is gone, or outta the way. What ever the case may be.

And yeah you're right Euro_Szabina. I should chill, the problem with me is that I'm just too nice of a guy (my minister even told me that I've eaten too much of humble pie) and always get stomped on. It's true what they say nice guys finish last. I'm just glad I moved away from Toronto.

should have let the air out his tires ... and pissed in the air vents ... and taken the license plate off the car ... and then reported the car as potentially stolen and then called Crimestoppers and report that it smells like a body/drugs in the trunk and then go grab and coffee and watch the fun!

As I see your name and story, I can't help but think of a my last visit to bean town, with an Asian buddy who parked his car, and could not find it (took a while)!!!

In Asia, you can pick any finger to show your number one, no?

Maybe you did not translate the finger correctly, maybe he was trying to tell you to wait 1 minute?

Know how you feel, working in central AB. Lots of farmers on these highways that drive 40 -50 km/hr. or farm equip. even slower are causing hazards & have less problems with DOT's than oilfield rigs. NOT FAIR!!

Everyone gets those thoughts sometimes, especially in those tense moments, as the way all people think is through categorization. However, if you don't mind a suggestion, I wouldn't bother with the extra effort of stating that you have Asian friends. For example, comments such as Joy Luck Club is my favorite movie or Yukio Mishima is my favorite writer in a similar context makes one appear to be using minorities and or notions of minority culture as objects signifying an aura of authenticity, but actually the effect is the complete opposite. Basically, I have heard too many times, "I'm not racist, I have many black friends."

Good advice. So what advice to you give Asians, East Indians, etc when they have those thoughts or make comments towards Caucasians?
