After a weekend in which York Regional Police laid 27 charges related to impaired driving against 16 drivers, the force says it has had enough.

Effective immediately, York police plan to publicly identify every driver charged with a criminal offence related to impaired driving, the force said in a news release Monday.
“It’s clear that something has to change,” Chief Eric Jolliffe said in the release. “Innocent lives are put at risk every day by this irresponsible and criminal behaviour. We are not giving up.”

Every Monday, York police will post the names of everyone charged with an impaired driving-related offence online in the force’s media releases section.

The first official list of 16 names was posted Monday.

York police are not the first in the GTA to publicly name alleged drunk drivers: Halton Regional Police have been doing it for more than a year; Toronto police selectively release names in serious cases; and Durham Regional Police have been naming for more than 10 years, releasing lists of drivers charged during their Festive RIDE campaigns.

I was almost killed by a drunk.
Police should give drunks a bullet behind the ear and leave them dead in the ditch.

I assumed every place did this. Winnipeg has been doing this for years. Even gets published in the news.
It's always interesting to see that report come out in the papers right after Christmas time. If I remember correctly they also usually list the people who only get the 24hr suspension (between .05 and .08 I believe).

Im all for it. I've lost 4 friends to drunk driving plus another who will spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair. If a little bit of shame will prevent just one less tragedy its worth it. Cars are lethal weapons in the wrong hands (drunk). If it was up to me, if your caught drunk behind a wheel your drivers license is taken away FOREVER If they drunk person has so little regard for someone else's safety they shouldn't be driving Shaming someone wont bring my friends back to life but hopefully it will prevent more tragedy

Texting while driving should be treated the same way.

Actually, I'd like to see them whipped in a public square. Something that will leave scars....

When I go out to eat, I limit myself to 1 or 2 drinks, and wait an hour or two. Unless I have made previous plans for transportation, I limit myself. Why can't others....

As for texting, the officer should be allow to smash the phone when a person is caught.... :laser:

A minivan in front of me looked to have a TV for kids in the backseat.
I pass and see it's a full size tablet mouted on the windshield. The guy was watching TV while driving.

It was porn and you didn't even have the decency to wave hello!
What were you doing with your left hand?
Always use both hands when holding your steering wheel Jethro!

Drunk drivers are pieces of shit, endangering everyone within five hundred feet of them....Overseas we wouldn't let drinkers operate any vehicle, and we were in a war zone, ......and killing people was our job.

I have a vivid imagination. I can imagine the horror I would experience for the rest of my life if I killed or maimed someone while driving drunk. That keeps me on the straight and narrow where drink and vehicles are concerned.

I can only suppose that those who do drink and drive have no ability to imagine consequences, or just don't give a shit.
