had the brilliant new year's idea of formatting hard drive and reintalling only the stuff i wanted ... two attempts and its up and running ... however:

I have messanger and quicktime in my taskbar menu even though i took them out of the add/remove windows programs ... the start menu/taskbar thing won't let me remove programs and i can't remember where that little gem is hidden.

second, i want to shut-off the highlight new programs function ... everytime i update my anti-virus xp thinks its a new program

third, how do i get rid of the opening screen that asks me to click on my name before i can actually get on my own computer?

thanks!

Sounds like you're getting your hands dirty for the New Year.

1. Right-click the buttons you wish to remove from the task bar, and a menu should pop up. Click delete to move the icon to the Trash Bin...

2. You can't avoid the highlight new programs feature in XP. Perhaps your Virus checker has a default switch that can be suppressed.

3. After you land on your Desktop, pull up the Start menu, and click on the Avatar/Icon at the top. Press the Home button to modify all accounts, and delete any password that may be present on your account, and delete any other accounts including the Guest account if it is active. Your entry screen should then allow you to pass through un-impeded, "if" you are the only User registered. If a new account is created in the future, then you'll have to go through the Opening screen again to access the Desktop.

1. that only works temporarily ... there is a way to remove them using the system utilities but hell if i can remember it

2. actually, i just stumbled over that feature in the customize start menu ... there is a box that you can uncheck to stop highlighting the programs.

3. huh? no avatar/icon at the top ... just my name and no home button ... am i missing a step?

thanks

3. When you punch the Start menu, there should be an Icon at the top-left of the menu - the one with your name on it. If you click it, it will take you to to a new screen, with a Home button at the top. This will allow you to modify, create or delete User accounts. Delete any accounts in there, including the Guest account - except yours, of course.

1. If you want to remove all buttons from the task bar, right-click anywhere on the task bar, and highlight Properties. Then un-click the "Show Quick Launch" box.

2. Glad you solved No. 2... I forgot about that one.

Time to get under the hood of XP LG and get yer hands dirty.

Problem1: If you're running Pro, you can use GPEDIT.MSC to prevent Messenger from loading. Otherwise, even disabling it in startup won't cause it to "always" not run. Outlook, Outlook Express and some MS web pages can still make it load.

Start, Run and enter GPEDIT.MSC

For "per machine" restriction, go to Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Messenger. For "per user" restriction, go to User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Messenger.

You can now modify whether it starts initially and/or whether its to run at all.

Note: Outlook and Outlook Express will take longer to open, unless you turn off Messenger Support. In Outlook Express it is in Tools, Options, General tab. In Outlook it is in Tools, Options, Other.

Problem2: You alredy solved that one

Problem3: Goto to control panel and bring up user accounts. If you see a ASP account delete it. You should only see 2 accounts. Yours and Guest, which should be off. Click your account and click change password, leave all the shit blank and click create password and that should do it. Should just start-up straight into Windows.

Important: Start up MSN, and go to the Options, General tab, you need to un-check the box that says, "Automatically run Messenger when I log on to Windows".

Then it won't load when starting up...

That should do it!

start
run
type msconfig
then you can go into the system config utility
then click on startup, it will likely be there with a checked box. Un check it.

I think...thats what I do to stop something from loading on startup.

thanks guys ...

i have deleted outlook express and only use thunderbird so i don't know why messanger is hanging in there.

i am using xp home ... but will try your sequence to disable messenger.

i also deleted msn so would have to reload to switch off ... i think!

problem 3 solved itself ... just did xp up-dates and one file was a .NET file and now i just start and bam I'm at the desktop!

cool.

I knew about that one rdg, but I avoid telling people to go in there, as they can trip over a few boxes that lead to serious problems. You are right however.

nazi bastard.

PS: with the collective brilliance of all these comp-geeks, why hasn't anyone just written a simple, straight forward OS program that doensn't require 5 gigs of my harddrive!!!!!!!!!!

i miss ms-dos ...

Ahhhhhhhh bummer LG the Group Policy Editor is disabled in XP Home.

Soooooooooooooo yer gonna have to do it the uber geeky way. :)

To disable Windows Messenger 4.5 or later for Windows XP Home or Windows XP Pro:

Goto to start.....run and type regedit and navigate to:

Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Key: Software\Policies\Microsoft\Messenger\Client
Name: PreventRun
Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 1 disabled

Try this too:

Yes, you heard that right - uninstall. How? Use the Add/Remove Windows Components dialog of the Add or Remove Programs item in the Control Panel. But what you say? You can’t find no Windows Messenger? That’s right, you can’t. Because sneaky Microsoft has hidden it! Here’s how to “unhide” it:

1. Open %WINDIR%\INF\sysoc.inf with a text editor.
2. Look for the line that goes like this:
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7
3. Delete the hide keyword so that it now looks like this:
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7
4. Save the file and exit.
5. Click on Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs -> Add/Remove Windows Components
6. Scroll to the bottom of the list and you should now see 2 items for Windows Messenger. Uncheck both of them, giving a triumphant whoop of vindication as you do so.
7. Click on Next, and Windows Messenger will be fully uninstalled.

Enjoy an existence without Windows Messenger. We all deserve this much at least, if we have to live with Windows.

Next time LG just install xp pro for crying out loud so you can turn it off with the group policy editor.

thanks hitrack ...

i tried the first sequence and messenger isn't there ... the problem isn't that messenger is loading but that it keeps popping up in the taskbar because it is still listed in the startup menu.

the other way to get rid of it is to 'uncheck' it in the startup menu but then i get a nasty message from bill telling me my system is now unstable blabblahblah but it runs fine without messanger in the mess.

rather than upgrade to pro i am giving hard thought to going to Linus Mandrake ... it will run 64 bit (which i have) and firefox, thunderbird, open-office and that's all i ever use.

no games, no nothing else: that's why i find this ponderous mess from ms such a pain in the butt ... tons of crap i don't want, don't need, don't use, don't like and want gone.

funny enough ... after the clean install and format, the whole system now uses only (!!!!) 5 gigs of hard-drive space ...

While I admit to not being entirely familiar with the newer 64-bit XP system, I find it rather odd that you are unable to clear out MSN from your startup folder. This is a simple task in the 32-bit version, so a solution escapes me.

Also keep in mind that MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger are 2 seperate programs. Thats why sometimes you can have 2 little green guys down in your tray.

Like Maury said thats fukked. You need to grab a geek and have him look at your comp in person at this point.

1. still running 32 bit version

2. can clear it out by msconfig ... startup and uncheck messenger ... but then all these warnings pop up from bill about how unstable everything will be ... and its not ... it runs fine. he just doesn't like anyone not using his crap programs.
