OK, my nephew (12) really wants to get a game system and since his parents really can afford it he's been putting away his pennies and is really close to having enough to get it himself. So as a reward for his working so hard I figure I'll buy it for him and he can keep the money. I figure it only means my having to forego 1-2 pooning sesions.

Not being a video gamer, what i need to know is which is best to get either an X-Box or PSP or X-box kinects or X-box that's Kinect ready.
Which is most worth the money.

His mom isn't fancy on his going on line to play so that isn't necessary.
He plays all sorts of games NHL, Madden, Halo etc.
So what am I best off getting him. Any input would be really appreciated.

Xbox is a console and psp is a handheld. I'm sure you meant ps3 (bluray player = fun for whole family). My folks have a Wii and they love it, I've never tried, only game I play for past few years is a little Civilization. For what it's worth my old xbox broke, my ps2 never did.

Just find out what he was saving up for and surprise him with it. Getting the "best" system may not be necessary. He may have a preference for one reason or another.

ps3 has more exclusive titles like the infamous series, the killzone series, the uncharted series, etc. wouldn't touch wii as the next generation nintendo console that will replace the wii is on it's way soon. still a couple years before xbox 720 or ps4.

This is the year for NEW hand helds...PS Vista just came out $250 different prices for the games, and later this year Wii U near Thanksgiving time.
Consoles Xbox360 online is better, but you do need a $60 annual fee. Get the 250GB not the shitty 4GB you can't even save 1 game on the HD. PS3 online is free, but if you get PSPlus $55 annual fee like exculsive discounts on games, or some older libraries for free or a small fee. The games are yours for life. There's 2 models 160GB and 320 GB but both are not compatible to the older games. And the Nintendo Wii,great family fun,but it's a dud playing alone. The choice is yours.

Can I play old play station games on ps3?
If I can play FF7 on ps3, I would get one as soon as possible?
(I was gonna wait till iTune would start distributing it)

Yes you can. In fact I have it saved so I can kill Sephiroth when I am bored.

PS3 is great. I use it for my bluray and net flix too. Certainly worth getting.

Lol I picked up FF1 for my phone. I'm sure you can find a port for old playstation games to put on a computer.

A little off topic but I played a little skyrim and fallout on someones computer and it kicked the crap out my xbox fallout/oblivion. Almost made me want to get a new xbox, but I remember all the time I just kinda wasted doing the same thing over and over again (mind you copious amounts of pot weren't helping my case either then).

XBox is the King of Shooters... PS3 is a Driver's dream. I don't know why but that just seems to be the way the industry polarized.

Try and find a good wheel and pedal set for the XBox. Wait, don't bother I'll save you the trouble... unless you want to spend several hundred dollars to order a Fanatec set from Germany, you can't. PS3, walk into FutureShop and choose from about 15 different kinds for all price ranges.

XBox is a better overall user experience than the PS3. PS3 has a lot of Firmware updates, patches and downloads that you have to go through before you can play games. And new updates are required more often than the XBox.

PS3 has Blu-Ray.

XBox can play games straight from the Disc. PS3 they have to be installed to the Hard Disk. Not a big deal until you buy a new game, try to install it and get told you don't have enough space... then you have to spend time pruning your drive. This plays into the whole "need to spend time doing stuff before you can *play*"

Thats all I got for now. For me, the biggest factor would be, "What are his friends on?"

I think only the older model of the PS3 can play PS1/2 games. I think the latest edition of the console can't.
I recommend that you pick one up in Japan. In Akihabara, a 2nd hand PS3 (older edition) was only like 150 bucks.

In any case.... FF6 is better ;)

X-Box it is then. I don't think it's right for a kid to buy a game and then spend who knows how long preparing the system to play it. typical tech bs.
put in a disc and play is better.

Now. standard, Kienect or Kinect ready which I think might be best so it can be added when more games come out.

AFAIK, all PS3s are backwards compatible with most PS1 games - the issue arises with PS2 games. The original 20GB, 60GB, and 80GB North American PS3s (the ones with 4 USB slots, SD card slots, etc...) included the Emotion Engine chip and Graphics Synthesizer GPU for hardware based PS2 emulation, but this feature, was dropped in the 2 USB slot versions and all subsequent versions of both the "fat" and "slim" PS3. As a result, I've been rather loth to part with my PS3, despite the increased HDD space on later models.

The PS3 usually require a small amount of the game data to be stored on the HDD. It is a simple and painless process done the first time you play the game. Installing files to the HDD allows for quicker loading times and smoother game play. If you're going to get a 360 don't buy the 4 GB model as there are issues with some online content being accessible due to the small amount of storage it offers (Halo: Reach being one of them).

if you own the first gen ps3 yoou can play ff7 on it as it has full software emulation. if not you can buy it for the ps3 network and if you own a psp or a psp vita you can play those games on it aswell. there is a good selection of the classic ps1 rpgs. they are $10 dollars each.

I had the original XBOX and the PS2 at the same time and I liked the XBOX the best and thusly I would most likely prefer the XBOX 360 over the PS3.

One thing I will say about the blueray player for the PS2/PS3 is that this is something I would not utilize as the system would then be pulling double duty and thusly the mechanical parts would wear out faster.

As for gaming I am currently hooked on Shogun 2 for the PC....such an awesome game...nothing is as kickass as a 5th level "notorious killer" ninja who is a master poisoner/blackpowder alchemist......except for maybe a 6th level Geisha ;)

I have FF7 disc for my PS3 60GB,the backward compatibles were obsolete in 2009 or earlier. All later models need to be downloaded to play PS1+2 games.

PS3 needs to download new games on the harddrive and download game save takes anywhere from 10-20+mins. Dreadful.
