You would be saving the planet. Just do it!
Don't forget....you would be exterminating yourself and all your loved ones .... food for thought. Self sacrifice for a higher purpose is easy but sacrificing innocents people and kids especially is unthinkable to me.

People have been exterminating each other by the millions as long as there have been people. They are also exterminating animals. Trees. The oceans. The air. You name it. Humans are the cancer of the planet. We have turned it into a toxic toilet. Now billionaires are racing each other to go into space. No thought of cleaning up our beautiful earth which was a paradise until we got here. We don't deserve it.

If rather than nukes (sterilizing the planet for how many years to come) I could push a button to terraform the planet so it could start over quickly, without human interfererence, I would.

I read a lot of scifi. I suppose I would be the morally justified villain in my own mind anyway, in this story!

You have to clarify a point first. Does everyone cease to exist in the blink of an eye or does it cause a nuclear holocaust where everyone dies a slow painful agonizing radiation poisoning death
You would have to be some kind of evil to push it if it was option 2

If you could push a button to end all human life and everything humans had ever done on the planet, would you?
No, that's silly.

But I would say "Thanos was right". Over-population does need correcting. Even if you had that magical glove to create resources to match the population's needs; it would still redefine humanity as something lesser, as it's the struggles that define who we are.

Malthusian theorists believe that with a planet of 8 billion people that can only properly sustain 1 billion people; 7 Billion people would need to die within the next 100 years, "or else".... the problem is, "who gets to go? who would be in charge of deciding everyone's fate"?

So another ("movie-based") solution would be a Purge. Suspend all laws for 24 hours, once per year; see where that takes us. "Might makes right", "let they who has the most toys win".

...it'll be ugly, but it would solve a lot of problems in the end.

Humans are no different than any other species on earth. Eco-systems balance themselves. When there is an overgrowth of one species, scarcity of resources or rampant disease, or a predator species forces adjustment. This will happen to human over population as well, and an external cause may be a less unethical force than humans culling humans for the sake of sustainability, because who gets to choose who should go, and what criteria is just? A gradual reduction by an external element is the only proper way, just like any other species.

We might damage things while we're here, but we won't be here forever, nothing is. The earth will forget about us a few thousand years after we're gone. In the meantime, we are the only species on this planet who can appreciate the beauty of life. We're special, unique, and important. As far as we know, we're the only species in the universe that is self-aware. That counts. If we don't exist, no one will look on this place with awe and wonder.

Don't be such misanthropes. Don't push the button
Bullshit. Lots of animals appreciate the beauty of life. They display behavior that shows enjoyment. They can show contentment. Love. Satisfaction. Sadness. Anxiety. Enjoyment of nature and their surroundings. They don't need us to interpret what they feel.
Anyone who has shared a home with a dog or a cat will know that.

One proposed theory for depopulation that has been tossed around is that you revert the medical and pharmaceutical system back to what it was in the 1800’s. the population would get genetically stronger but the age of mortality would drop on average. But the rich and privileged would find a way around that

There is also a “biological button” referred as the Carrying Capacity or “K” curve of a population. Meaning after exponential growth of a population (humans), resources become more scarce (food, water, land, etc) and limitations in growth (disease, overpopulation, etc). The population then diminishes. We are the makers of our own demise (climate change, war, disease, oligarchy over democracy, poverty, capitalism over well-being). The button’s been pushed folks. Some of us choose not to see it.

Didn’t we already have a lunatic in power, that had his finger on one of the worlds “ off” buttons?
Even he didn’t have the balls.
