I haven't had a problem with any car rental agency with a national presence. Do not try to rent from an independent company to save a few bucks unless you're not going to drive very far. I've used BCAA roadstar once and I was well on my way within an hour. This was back in the day when it was ok to have a rental car bumper sticker on the car 
A motorist coming the other way at an intersection actually got out of his car and screamed at the top of his lungs that I had a flat !
When I was younger my buddies decided to purposely drive off the freeway and venture into a notorious part of town.We quickly realized it was not a smart thing to do when we noticed all the buildings boarded up, the billboards not advertsing to us and noticing that we were in the minority as mentioned by sevenofine:fear:
