As I said, the inflated salary era started long before that. I'd say the starting point was the Winnipeg Jets paying Bobby Hull $1 million when the WHA started back in 72. But it was the Oilers who really got the ball rolling: Gretzky's rookie contract, the likes of Coffey, Anderson and Messier sitting out for more money, Coffey trade, Gretzky trade and then so on.
