Sometimes I'm out and wearing old work clothes, when I get the urge.

The clothes are clean, as am I, but they are tattered and paint-splattered.

I feel if I call an SP I don't know that I'll be judged by my clothing, and she will assume I might be dirty, or don't care/respect her by showing up like that. Does this matter to SP's?

Do any of you have experience showing up for an appointment in less-than-nice clothing?

People want to pretend it doesn't matter, but those few seconds of first impressions always count across the board of so many studies. Google will be your best friend if you don't believe me. Some SPs are used to people showing up in all sorts of dress and they turn a blind eye as to not offend their clients; our lives may become at risk when showing displeasure. It would be ignorant to pretend it makes absolutely no difference between seeing someone show up in business casual vs artsy clothes.

That being said, if it's an SP you're able to text/email to give a heads up that you'd be coming in like a Jackson Pollock painting, it will likely be fun and positive walking in like a piece of live art! Most clients show up in t-shirt and jeans - it's the most expected of garments, and there's no complaints to be made there.

Personally I wouldn't be bothered, and would likely ask about your projects as I am a diy/fix it girlie myself! Even if you came in from gardening with literal dirt on your hands, you can just strip and shower and we are good to go. Not everyone is like me though, and it might impact your time with other providers. First impressions only happen once. A heads up text like Rina said would be considerate and give you better odds.

As long as you have a shower when you arrive the condition of your clothes shouldn't matter.

Addressing all three:

While old work clothes that are clean shouldn’t matter, I absolutely agree that condition does matter. It’s technically quite easy to tell when the skin is clean versus work clothes that have been worn all morning and you have filthy hands. At the same time, I don’t want have to ask to see your hands or to come closer to smell you to be more certain that stained clothes (more specifically) aren’t freshly bacteria coated. 🤷‍♀️

I agree with the point of feeling hesitancy to vocalize concerns as there can be risk. While I’m fine with painted clothes, just be very respectful about hygiene and especially touching the clothes or money that you came in with after you showered but before handling me. I personally have a biology-related phobia and am a very safe girl for that reason. While I have discernment. I still appreciate people who dress well, especially if there’s a uniform involved.
