Kind of curious where all these people wanting a 15/hr min wage went. Currently dealing with a labour shortage in whistler, offering 16.50/hr starting and 40+ hrs a week with transportation and getting nothing, I even went and offered kids working at the grocery store and Tim Hortons apprenticeships. Are trades that looked down upon or do kids just not want to work?

Obviously I'd pay more for someone that's got a ticket or any schooling done, at this point though I'll hire kids right out of highschool and train them. The ones coming out of pre-app think they know everything and won't ask questions, end up having to babysit them.
Is there any reasonably priced accommodation in Whistler that $15 an hour would support?
Considering one of the painters is renting a walk in closet for 600/month I'd say no. But 16.5 with a 40hr guarantee is a lot better than the 13/hr part time at the sushi shop, or the 14.5 part time at the nesters

Doesn't every generation say that of the generation that follows it? I frequently read how the Millennials are lazy and unmotivated which ignores the fact that most of the software & technology in this world was created by..the Millennials. You live in a resort town where finding a place to live is nearly impossible. Why would anyone decide to go work out there knowing they might share a room with 3 other people. And as for it hard to find decent tradespeople these days well don't blame the kids. Blame our society which has ingrained the concept that white collar work is worthy while blue collar work is for dumb people. Put a $50,000 a year accountant next to a $120,000 dollar a year plumber. Society will respect the accountant more & he'll get hotter chicks.
Have you considered the possibility of hiring old farts instead of young bucks? I'm thinking, not of skilled tradespeople, but older folks who worked in other fields but might like to do something different.

$16.50/hour seems pretty low these days to be expecting to attract reliable keen workers, even with no experience. I was hired for construction work at $12/hour in Whistler with no experience 25 years ago. I was reliable and bust my ass for my employer to make up for my lack of experience.
Based out of Squamish and commute in a company vehicle for free, so they aren't dealing with whistler rental market.

Finishing off 20 town homes, and roughing in a 6700sq ft house and a 5300 sq ft house
Or unskilled labourers looking to learn a trade, have no problem teaching, ATM I'm overseeing 4 other ticketed electricians.
Who can survive in the lower mainland, never mind Whistler, on $32k/year?!?!
Its funny - every construction trade owner is making a killing in this market and yet they all complain that they can't find decent workers. Maybe if you guys actually reached into your pockets and paid livable wages instead of pocketing it all yourselves you might have an easier time finding people.
