Wal-Mart announced that, on January 1, 2007, it will begin offering
customers a new discount item - WALMART's own brand of wine. The world's
largest retail chain is teaming up with Ernest & Julio Gallo Winery of
California to produce the spirits at an affordable price, in the $2-$5
range.Wine connoisseurs may not be inclined to throw a bottle of WalMart
brand into their shopping carts, but "there is a market for inexpensive
wine," said Kathy Micken, professor of marketing at University of
Arkansas, Bentonville. She said: "But the right name is
important."Customer surveys were conducted to determine the most
attractive name for the WalMart wine brand. The top surveyed names in
order of popularity were:

10. Chateau Traileur Parc
9. White Trashfindel
8. Big Red Gulp
7. World Championship Riesling
6. NASCARbernet
5. Chef Boyardeaux
4. Peanut Noir
3. I Can't Believe It's Not Vinegar!
2. Grape Expectations
1. Nasti Spumante

The beauty of Wal-Mart wine is that it can be served with either white
meat (Possum) or red meat (Squirrel).

Wal-mart would also like people to know that not one grape was killed in the making oftheir specialty bottled wine.

LOL....cute

As much as its easy to poke fun and at times loath walmart they've got a business model that obviously works. I've shopped as some of the gigaplex stores in the US that provide the regular walmart fare (i.e. kitty litter, gallon bottles of shampoo, guns & ammo and no end of stirrup pants and other fat chick clothing) but have also incorporated a full service grocery store and it rocks! If you go to a store thats in a upper middle class neighborhood their selection of gourmet food, wine and liquor is pretty amazing and at substantially lower prices then other retailers.

However, the master of cheap and good wine has got to be Trader Joes and their Two Buck Chuck

There are several versions of that spoof story, some of which have other names for the bogus wines. Here are some of them:

Box O' Grapes
Chateau du Crack Chardonnay
Domaine Wal-Mart "Merde du Pays"
Sam's Dog 20/20
Trucker's Choice
Blue Light Special Nun
Chateau des Moines
Mogen Darryl

And, here's David Letterman's list of the top ten slogans for Walmart wines:

10. "When Kmart Wine Just Won't Do"
9. "I Can't Believe It's Not Wine"
8. "Show Your Friends How Little You Care"
7. "Kills Germs on Contact"
6. "Recommended by 4 Out of 5 Drifters!"
5. "Crack Open a Can Today!"
4. "Fresh From the Vineyards of Aisle 6"
3. "Here's to Making Bail!"
2. "Feeling Down After Being Thrown Out by Britney?"
1. "Goes Great With a 20-Dollar Hooker"

I actually liked their wine. It was great for when I wanted a glass with dinner at home and didn't need to impress anyone.

There are a lot of very drinkable cheap wines available everywhere, except here in BC. Importing wine into BC is rediculously expensive as the province is protecting it's fledgling wine industry. The upside is that BC is starting to produce some pretty good high end wines, the down side is that we pay way to much for cheap stuff.

I have used a couple of places that will do your wine on premises and all you do is go in when they call you and bottle it. I usually take the more expensive red juice wine kits and end up with approx 30 bottles at about $5 apiece. The wine is very drinkable as is is, or I often mix it with juice and ice on a hot summer day.

Unfortunately, in much of the world, I could buy similar stuff for the same price and not have to go through the hassle of making batches. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy a high end wine now and again and I can taste a definate difference. But I can enjoy the cheaper stuff as well.
