So how does the Joker fit into this one? If we recall, Jack Nicholson played the Joker in the first remake of Batman starting Michael Keaton.
The current movies are a rewrite of the Batman story (finally). So anything from the earlier films doesn't apply.

with all this batman hype in here im surprised nobody has mentioned the new animated shorts -- Batman: Gotham Knight ... im not too sure if i am right about this but i do believe it is supposed to be filler for what is happening inbetween the 2 movies (batman begins and dark knight obviously)..

somewhat similar to the star wars: clone wars animated shorts but with more of an animatrix style of different artists for each short

according to amazon.ca it isnt going to be released until next tuesday.. but if you are familiar with the piratescene many rips are already available

In addition to that Gotham Knight DVD being released, look what finally came out on Blu-Ray today!

According to Amazon.com:

Note: The limited-edition Blu-ray gift set includes Blu-Ray high-def exclusive content: The Dark Knight Prologue, plus Hollywood Movie Money to see The Dark Knight in theaters (a $7.50 value), 32-page exclusive Dark Knight Prologue book, 16-page comic book adaptation of the first 6 minutes of The Dark Knight, a Batman Begins lenticular, and five collectible post cards.

-- I believe the "Dark Knight Prologue" being referenced above is that IMAX trailer.

All the reviews I've been reading are neutral to outstanding, I guess there are some subtle references to "The Prestige" and Heath has a "brokeback mountain" moment or comment.

I can't wait to see it, however I love dark films. Don't know if people are going to like it or not, heck I don't even know if I will like it.

But with a guy who made "American Psycho" one of my favourites Patrick "Because I want to fit in!" Bateman and in all likelihood the best Joker ever...Heath, I think It will be just fine.

Bateman never did get his just due for AP, Heath will, for this portrait, and the former will get his just due as well....In time...In time.

I have to to stop quoting movies.....stop, no; you stop....shut up...no you shut up. I love movies:)

Absolutely brilliant!

I just got back from watching this and it lives up to every ounce of the hype. It's pitch perfect from beginning to end and hits every note you could want in a Batman movie! Heath Ledger's performance is nothing short of brilliant. But the movie as a whole works on every level. Best Batman movie ever!

Batman breaks Spider-Man record at box office
By Dean Goodman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - KAPOW!

The new Batman movie "The Dark Knight" smashed the weekend record set by "Spider-Man 3" last year, selling an estimated $155.3 million worth of tickets during its first three days of release across the United States and Canada, distributor Warner Bros. Pictures said on Sunday.

The hotly anticipated film, co-starring late actor Heath Ledger as the anarchic Joker, surpassed the $151.1 million haul for "Spider-Man 3" during its first weekend in May 2007.

Going into the weekend, pundits had forecast an opening in the $100 million range, evidently underestimating the Batmania infecting movie fans across the world.

The Caped Crusader also generated $40 million from 20 foreign markets, highlighted by No. 1 bows in Ledger's native Australia ($13.1 million) and Mexico ($6.6 million), the Time Warner Inc-owned studio said.

With a little help from another new release "Mamma Mia!" which opened at No. 2 with $27.6 million, "The Dark Knight" propelled overall North American ticket sales to a record $253 million, according to tracking firm Media By Numbers. The old mark of $218 million was set two years ago, the company said.

"The Dark Knight" stars Welsh actor Christian Bale as Batman, and was directed by English filmmaker Christopher Nolan. They previously collaborated on "Batman Begins," which earned $48.7 million during its first weekend in 2005, and finished up with $205 million.

"Dark Knight" should hit that level by midweek, Warner Bros. said.

The new film reportedly cost about $180 million to make, thanks in part to the pioneering use of heavy Imax cameras to shoot 30 minutes of the 152-minute film for giant-screen theaters. The filmmakers also blew up bits of Chicago, which doubles for the fictional Gotham City.

HOT FOR HEATH

But it is Ledger's performance as the Joker, a role last taken on by Jack Nicholson for 1989's "Batman," that has generated the most buzz. It was the 28-year-old actor's last completed role before he died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs in January.

Many pundits have already declared that he is a shoo-in to receive an Oscar nomination for his creepy turn as the bane of Batman's existence.

Tickets for many weekend screenings sold out long ago, and moviegoers -- some dressed as characters from the movie -- had to wait hours in long lines to get inside once the film opened just after midnight on Friday. Some theaters added 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. screenings that day to help meet demand.

A huge portion of the 94 Imax Corp theaters screening "The Dark Knight" are already sold out for the week and next weekend, said Greg Foster, chairman and president of the firm's filmed entertainment division.

The Imax theaters contributed a record $6.2 million to the weekend tally, breaking the old mark of $4.7 million for "Spider-Man 3," he added.

Meanwhile, the $27.6 million for "Mamma Mia!" ranks as the biggest for a musical, said distributor Universal Pictures. The romantic comedy, inspired by the pop tunes of Swedish pop group ABBA, stars Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan, who also try their hand at singing.

The General Electric Co-owned studio said women accounted for three-quarters of the audience, and almost two-thirds of patrons were aged 30 and older.

The film earned $26.8 million from 21 foreign markets, taking its international total to $72.6 million. It logged a second weekend at No. 1 in Sweden, slipped to No. 2 in Australia and Britain, and opened at No. 1 in Germany, the studio said.

I enjoyed the movie, will have to go see it again because the sound sucked, even people around me were commenting on it. One guy even yelled "louder".

Maybe that's the way the movie was filmed, did anyone else have this experience?

It's not so much that the movie wasn't loud enough, but not quite balanced, I heard a majority of what was said, but there were times esp near the end, when the theme music was drowning out what was being said.

Oh Well...Having said that, HL will at least have an Oscar Nom, and if he does, he will win it, because he simply deserves it... even at this early stage, I predict it. I know it's not quite a reach...

The person who chooses to best it, will, umm, I'm not sure. Don't think it's going to happen.

I would like to make a comment on Patrick...oops I mean Christian Bale; this guy is a "tour de force" himself. This guy can act, it doesn't show as much in "The Batman", but you know what I mean.

I have a feeling Bale will step up his game even more in memory of his co-star. I'm not sure if generally people can understand that Bale once played a character similar to the joker, yet more ...80's.

They're the perfect match, so I believe Heath will be somewhat present as Bale continues his career.
