I have to as a rather n00bish question here: Why is it called pooning? I know we are called pooners, but I imagine that this is because we "poon". Just wondering where the name came from.

I never liked the term pooner, reminds of a slang term for something else.
johns or tricks are more to the point of what where all talking about IMO. Although it's harder to turn into a verb. "I was out tricking yesterday night" Sounds kinda clumsy.

Pooning, etc. definitely come from "poontang", a common North American term for which a synonym is "nookie".
However, PERB is the only place where I've ever seen the terms "pooning", "poon" and "pooner". In the rest of North America, pooners are called hobbyists. In the UK, they're "punters". And, on international boards, they're usually called "mongers" (short for the biblical term "whoremongers").

Personally, I'm with mustangjoe, hitrack, etc... I have always found the term a bit bizarre.
