Why is it called a donation?

Having just done my taxes I became curious why this misnomer came into use. I mean, unles you are a registered charity, it is illegal to accept donations isn't it?

Is it because it puts the onus on the SP and is a less serious crime than paying for sex in the US? Donating so a woman won't say no to sex. But that would be bribery. Hey are bribes taxable? That would solve the problem.. "no your honor I was not paid for sex, I was bribed to do it for an hour."

Of course in Canada it would be "Your honor, of course I was paid for sex, what, do I look like a slut to you?" Lol.

I guess when you hear on the news about a family who's homeless due to their house burning down, there is often an account set up for donations. So do they just claim it as income? I know when I donate to the Womens sexual asault center, it's a tax write off. Would the homeless family scenario qualify? Any tax adjusters here that can answer that question?

Here. There. Everywhere.
A taxable donation has to be a registered charity, political party, church or school... that's when you get a receipt and write it off.

Any other donation is just that - you give money for nothing or very little back. In this case, I guess it's just a misnomer.

Not to be picky or anything, but in Canada it's actually "My Lord" or "M'Lord" instead of "Your honor".

Donations are not illegal but to claim it, you need an official tax receipt. Some charities are not registered so you can not claim those on your return but there is nothing stopping you from giving to them,

In Supreme Court it's "My Lord" or "M'Lord" or "My Lady" or "M'Lady". In Provincial Court it's still "Your Honour"

Having spent enough time in Provincial Court, I would tend to agree...

From an income tax perspective, a GIFT should be tax free.

As a "business", perhaps treating the $ as "consulting fee" would allow one to claim the assoicated expenses like rent, telephone.

At the "Y"
Actually Tapper, "Your Honor" is the correct form of address to a Judge of the Provincial Court. A Justice of the Peace conducting Traffic Court is addressed as "Your Worship", and a Judge of the Federal Court, Supreme Court or Court of Queen's Bench (depending on the Province) is addressed as "Lord" or "Lady".

Who says I was too hung over in law school to learn anything? Ok, other than my professors, who says?

I could be wrong but doesn't the origins of the term have something to do with "giving the girl a donation to her college fund." ;) ;) The phrase is kind of a euphamism to make the transaction sound less business like, and illegal in the US.
