The recent thread on the Parq Casino got me wondering why people gamble?

I think I lost $10 a long time ago on some slots at an airport, and I've purchased the odd lottery ticket (usually for charities), but I've only ever gone to a casino for a meal or a show, I just never gamble. I don't see the appeal. The odds are stacked ridiculously against the customer, and whatver you win will never match what you lose over time. The place is dark and noisy. Everyone is in their own world.

If I'm going to spend money recklessly, I'd do it where I get something in return like an SP's services, or an expensive restaurant meal, or a flight upgrade.

So, other than the slim chance you might win someething once in a while - what's the appeal?

Must be the thrill of the chance of winning money. I have a buddy that gambles a lot whether it's sports or going to the casino. He would never think to sleep with another woman other than his wife, but loves gambling. I never got the same thrill from gambling, but I love the thrill of being with different women.

Poker, because it's like solving a problem. Blackjack, because technically speaking the game was solved years ago and it's a rare thing in life where one can know exactly what to do in every situation - don't know why, but I do find that comforting.

Depend on your personality. Once you get a taste of turning 200-300 into 5000+ in one night or even 200 to 1000 you might reconsider as you are now playing with house money.

I have friends up 50k+ from gambling after several years starting from just playing for fun a few hundred here and there

It's the same with SP. Why do woman do SP versus a job? None of those girls when they were little girls wanted to be SP as a dream job. But once they get a tasting of making 1000+ in a night of straight cash they reconsider. One of my SP friend told me she made 38k in one month cash and was averaging 15-25k a month. SP + sugar daddy relationships

None of it goes to CRA with SP or gambling.

A married couple I know have a terrible gambling addiction. They are both intelligent, reasonable people, but are in denial about the destruction their habit has had on them. They go to Vegas and blow five or ten thousand, and then rationalise it by saying they got a free meal or concert ticket.
Many of their friends have tried talking to them about it but it always ends up in arguments.
It's as bad as any drug addiction.

same :) Ive never purchased a lottery ticket before, or entered a casino on my own terms. I've accompanied a few degenerates in the past, but I didnt partake. I buy the odd scratch and win, but I never think Ill win anything. I do it mostly to kill time for entertainment.

The lottery is something I do for fun, not with an expectation of victory. The odds? Oh, I'm well aware of them: winning the Lotto Max would be like the ultimate Hail Mary pass - throwing the ball in Vancouver and having it caught... in Montreal.

But no, I have never felt the thrill of wagering money on poker, horses, whatever - and slots are just a dull way of sucking money out of your pocket. I grew up playing arcade games, so if I was going to start dumping coins into a machine, at least that is a fun machine.

But for that same reason, I see people spending serious $$$ on pay-as-you-play VG's on their phones, where you have to buy features to make it playable, more or less buying wins rather than earning them by skill. That is making them suckers in a scammy way that is a close cousin to gambling.

To really win on that scale you have to be a pro gambler. But for all the hours and dollars you have to put in to be really be a professional card sharp, could you not just become a professional investor and invest that same money and "win" as many profits? Many have said the markets are basically just casino gambling wearing more respectable clothes. And given the fact that people can now do trades from home while wearing their PJ's, I'm surprised that people risk their money doing inconsequential games.

I suppose I just don't have a gambler's personality. :ranger:

I gambled away a hundred US in Kansas City once....never again.
I have some friends that like to take me to the track because of my judgement/ knowledge of horses....I will pick one in the top three every time....but I will never bet.
The variable is always the Jockey, and how heavy they are with the whip.....and I won't pay up to watch an animal being struck to perform better.

Well it depends.

Whenever I do go to the casino, I always throw $40 on the roulette table. It's a free meal if I win. It's not a pain if I lose. But sometimes you visit the casinos and you see the people sitting on slot machines getting the life sucked out of them. It's pretty awful.

Accompanied a girlfriend who lost $600 on Baccarat in 10 minutes. Then another one who was ahead by $200 on the slot machine but won't walk away.

Went down a quarter million with derivatives in the U.S. stock market ponzi in 2011. Disgusted me so much, been in savings accounts and GICs years now. Net, I actually broke even on cash after paying years of rent and 20k worth of dental implants.

I win fairly regularly - much more than a "slim" chance. Paid off credit cards, etc. Tonight I came home with $1100 extra in my pocket. Haven't partaken in this hobby in over 2 years.....might do so tomorrow.
Never really gambled at a casino until about 3.5 years ago.

I know a couple doing the same....she considers gambling her occupation....He encourages it so he can sit at home and be a loser.
It's too the point of her saying she is "going to work"....and she puts in nine hour days ,five days a week.
She does win some money , and a decade ago an inherited windfall paid for their place, so their bills are low....I just wonder if they put as much energy ,and excuses into a real business. How much success they'd have.
It's the same way as your friends when you try to talk to them about it....always turns into a defensive argument.
Their life....Their future ....I've given up watching them slowly circle the drain, as their lives and property take a slow degradation.
