Why don't more industry advocates post on review boards?

There still seems to be very few SWO's, escort industry advocates or groups who bother to post on review boards.

Where else can you find thousands of SP's, clients and others involved in the industry, all gathered in one place (or several places on various boards), where we can all communicate and share ideas?

Most of the advocates I've seen speaking up anywhere, seem to be focused on the rights of sex workers.

Well, it's already legal for sex workers to work, so where's the uproar on behalf of clients who are still in danger of prosecution?

I know I'm talking to the Vancouver industry where everything is sunshine and roses thanks to the VPD, but what about the other 90% of the country where it's not so wonderful?

I don't see advocacy groups speaking up there either.

I've said this before - perb, terb and merb combined have over 1,000,000 members, so why do all 3 boards act as separate entities unto themselves? Even when one board gets hacked, no one bothers to go to another board to find out what's happening.

Why ignore the boards when they're such an excellent resource and venue for communicating?

Are there male advocacy groups? Are they on any of the boards?

I encourage more individuals to see how you can get involved, rather than depending on one person or group to do it on your behalf.

You could be the one who makes a difference!

If you feel incapable of speaking up yourself, donate to organizations like PIVOT, who are still fighting the good fight on our behalf as they research and prepare to challenge the law someday.

These are just a few achievements you’ve been instrumental in, but there is still much more work to be done. Extreme poverty, discrimination and criminalization are fuelling a human rights crisis in Canada.

Your support today will help create systemic change by fighting for the rights of marginalized people. Please give today.

Who we are
Maggie's: The Toronto Sex Workers Action Project is an organization run for and by local sex workers. Our mission is to assist sex workers in our efforts to live and work with safety and dignity. We are founded on the belief that in order to improve our circumstances, sex workers must control our own lives and destinies.

We welcome workers of all genders from all areas of the sex trade - street-based sex workers, exotic dancers, escorts, pornography actors, phone sex operators, professional dominants and submissives, erotic massage workers, web cam workers, and others - to join us in our fight to control our own bodies, sexuality and working lives.

Our mission
Maggie’s mission is to provide education, advocacy, and support to assist sex workers to live and work with safety and dignity.

Our principles
We are founded on the belief that to improve our lives, sex workers must take the power to control our own destinies. That is why Maggie’s exists first and foremost as an organization for sex workers, that is controlled by sex workers. To quote the slogan: “Nothing about us, without us is for us!"

Sex work is real work. We are not criminals, deviant or victims. We are working people and we demand to be recognized as such.
Sex work is real work.Sex work is socially legitimate, important and valuable work. All sex work is equally valid, whether it be dancing, street work or domination and we are entitled to labour rights; the right to form unions or professional associations; the right to work independently, collectively or for a third party; and the right to occupational health and safety.

We recognize that sex work is not the same as human trafficking. Sex work is a job selling some form of sexual service. Trafficking is coerced or forced labour.

Sex worker empowerment stops human trafficking. Current anti-trafficking laws and policies often do more harm than good, leading to further stigma, criminalization, police harassment, violence, extortions and deportations of migrant sex workers while disregarding their actual concerns or needs. Maggie's supports effective, evidence-based solutions to the problem of human trafficking that locates sex workers as a key part of the solution. We support open borders and labour and human rights for undocumented workers.

*Request a Best Practices & Legal Workshop on the new sex work laws, the Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act (formerly known as Bill C36). These workshops can be offered to sex workers directly, or to community, agency and social workers (the latter for a fee). To request a workshop, email: maggietrains@gmail.com

POWER – Ottawa, ON

http://www.powerottawa.ca/

@POWER_Ottawa

POWER (Prostitutes of Ottawa-Gatineau Work Educate & Resist) is a non-profit, voluntary organization founded on February 17th, 2008. Membership is open to individuals of all genders who self-identify as former or current sex workers, regardless of the industry sector in which they work(ed) (i.e. dancers, street level workers, in and out call workers, phone sex, etc.) and to allies who share our vision.

We envision a society in which sex workers are able to practice their professions free of legal and social discrimination, victimization, harassment and violence and in which sex work is valued as legitimate and fulfilling work making an important contribution to society.

POWER believes that...
• Sex work is honourable, valuable work worthy of celebration.
• Sex workers are entitled to the same legal and human rights as any other persons in Canada and the same labour rights as any other persons working in Canada.
• The criminalization of sex workers, their partners, clients and families is unacceptable. The decriminalization of sex work is imperative.
• Sex workers are the experts about the industry and must be actively and meaningfully included in the development of policies that affect them.
• Misconceptions about sex work undermine the well being, safety and health of sex workers.
• Fighting for sex workers’ rights is part of a broader movement for social justice.
• By fighting for sex worker’s rights we are contributing to the formation of strong, safe communities for everyone.
• We must develop strategies to minimize the violence experienced by sex workers.

Stepping Stone was founded in 1987 and is the only organization in the Maritimes that deals specifically with street life and sex work from a harm reduction model. Our offices and drop-in centre are located in a modest, non-residential house, where many of our staff members are former sex-workers. Our support is crucial to the well-being of hundreds of female, male and transgendered sex workers, and we do this in several key ways.

We Support Choice: Stepping Stone believes that all individuals have the right to self-determination. We do not interfere with or attempt to stop their work; rather, we assist them in making their life choices as safe and positive as possible.

We Protect: The Stepping Stone house is a safe-haven from the street, and hub of activity. Much more than a place to shower and have a nutritious snack, the house hosts regular vistas from many community partners including; community and mental health nurses, legal aid, and Avalon. We are a one-stop shop for access to services such as growth activities; and computer access and educational opportunities. The house is a place where sex workers meet and form a community; the house is also a home.

We Advocate: Our trained staff provide advocacy through a variety of ways such as court support, housing support (to locate maintain stable and adequate housing), building community relation, and through harm reduction.

We Reach Out: Four evenings a week our Street Outreach Program connects with our clients on the stroll as well as those working out of private houses. Outreach allows us to visit our clients on the job, and ensure that they are safe and have the supplies they need to remain that way. We provide condoms, food and drinks, Bad Tricks Lists, crisis intervention, and referrals to in-house staff for further aid. Outreach workers forge friendly and trusted relationships with street-based sex workers who may otherwise be isolated from they communities.

Challenge
Pivot's social change campaigns focus on a broad range of issues - policing, housing, sex work, child welfare, violence against women and drug policy. Winnipeg Working Group

https://www.facebook.com/WinnipegWG

@WinnipegWG

A coalition of Winnipeg-based sex workers, activists, researchers and health professionals fighting for the reform of Canada's prostitution laws

The Winnipeg Working Group is organized as a chapter of the Canadian Alliance for Sex Work Law Reform. It is a coalition of sex workers, activists, researchers, health care professionals, and allies from Winnipeg who joined forces to challenge the view in Manitoba that all sex work is exploitative. The WWG defends the position that approaches to prevent violence and protect the human rights of sex workers must be informed and directed by sex workers themselves, focused on harm reduction, and evidence-based. Our current focus is on figuring out effects of and protections against the new laws enacted under the Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act. We also support national efforts by sex workers and their allies to challenge these laws.

If you wish to know more about this group, and especially if you are working in like-minded perspective, please contact us at winnipeg.wg@gmail.com

SexSafetySecurity/Johns Voice has been successful in using the boards across Canada multiple times to promote their research projects and ask for participants.

Don't forget to take part in their survey: https://perb.cc/vbulletin/showthread.php?233731-Survey-www-street-to-screen-ca

SWO's and advocacy groups don't need to become our best buddies or spend 5 days a week posting here, to be able to use our forums as a place to promote their causes and fundraise.

It just doesn't make sense to me that they ignore what could be such an obvious asset to their causes.

I've been told to sit down and shut up by industry advocates, told I'd never be accepted into their groups and that I'd never be effective on my own.

They were wrong. I didn't need their approval or permission to have a massive impact on the boards, because I participate on them, even if it's just to drop in and update a thread every once in a while.
