With the resignation of Julie Payette, it really makes Me question the validity of this Position .
Canada has been a sovereign state for over 150 years, so why would We need a representative to the Queen of England ?
What justifies an annual expenditure of $35 Million ?

https://www.gg.ca/en/the-office/annual-reports
Couldn't that money be put to more effective uses ?
It just makes Me wonder, WTF ! ?

Mr Q.

P.S. Julie's appointment was another knee-jerk Justin decision, for those who are counting .
You're asking two different questions:

Your header question: Why does Canada need a GG - Because we need somebody to sign off on the bills passed by parliament and to prorogue the parliament when needed. This is necessary to keep the parliament from tail spinning into a vortex. That's the main reason, but there are others? It can be a GG, a president, or somebody with another title. Many other duties are ceremonial and are not entirely necessary.

Your question in the message - Why do we need a Queen's representative - We don't really need a Queen's representative. But as long as remain a monarchy, it looks like the figurehead head of state will be the Queen's representative. So, we will have to decide if we want to continue being a monarchy. I personally have no take either way.

Remember when Christy Clark lost the confidence vote 44-42 in BC legislature on June 29, 2017 Lt. Governor Judith Guichon turned down Clark's request to dissolve the legislature and call a snap election and invited John Horgan, who had signed a confidence and supply agreement with the Greens, to form the government.

In such times as above, the position of Lt. Gov., who also happens to be Queen's representative in right of British Columbia, becomes important. Without a LG, who could have checked Clark from turning into a dictator?

Same is the need for a Governor General, Queen's representative in right of Canada or not.

Thanks for making Me reevaluate my choice of Thread title !
The original didn't convey my intended Point .

I'm aware of the GG's functions . My Question was more in context of the current validity of GG's Role ?
What's scary as fuck to Me, is that the future, and well being of Canada could pivot on the politically appointed GG's decision making abilities ! ?

E.G. Adrienne Clarkson(Television Reporter), Michaelle Jean(Television Reporter) WTF ! ?
Somebody like Dr Bonnie Henry, with a proven public record of making tough Decisions for the betterment of the overall Citizens, would be a vastly better choice !

We haven't revisited the Canadian Constitution in almost 40 years .
Another Generation, or two, so maybe it's long overdue ? ?

As far as the Monarchy . We need a final Divorce !
I'm a 3rd Generation Canadian of Scotch/European descent, and my Great-grandparents left the old countries to get away from that Bullshit !
We're Canadians ??, not Brits ?? !

They divorced Europe, We should divorce Them !

Mr Q.

P.S. I'm not the only Canadian who feels that We should reevaluate the GG's Position .

Well in a couple of years we will find out why the GG quit. The problem is that they picked a younger woman to fill the position. Usually our GG are old, less energetic. Maybe the GG was a bitch to her people. More than likely, she had to put up with a person(s) who did not work well (well maybe use the word- lazy). Being an astronaut, you have to be go-getter, and expect people you work with to do the same. The typical government worker isn't as likely to be a go-getter. The problem is with government workers, its very hard to fire them, unless they break laws etc. A second thing to remember is that those government workers stick together when there is an outside force...
And the thing is that whatever was happening should of never entered the mainstream news. This is true of the GG office because it is supposed to be non-political... Whoever leaked it should be fired.

As for a previous GG who still puts in expenses, she is retired is should only be entitled to her pension. It would be different if the Government ask her to do something. As for the pension 150,000.00 a year is piss compared to a budget of 335 Billion/year

As much as everyone thinks that Canadians elect our Government, its really the civil service that is the government of Canada. They are the ones advising the ministers (of whatever portfolio) on how to do their job. They are the experts in those departments, not the politicians.

I think the GG position is still valid.

As for the senate, they need new rules, like to show up for work etc or don't get paid. An elected senate, I don't want Canada to go the route of the US. Its all about the election of, and the raising of money. No the senate still has to be tied to the provinces. Maybe appointed not by the PM but by MLAs (provincal legislature) in that province. Yes there needs to be senate reform.
