because athletes in the past that have carried the flag and have been the best at what they do always seem to have some problem in there sports and they end up finishing out of the medals. so now no one wants to touch that curse

Its because you have to march around carrying it for a couple of hours then sit on a cold bench for another 4 hours then ride a bus back to the village which takes another 4 hours. If you have to compete the next day you end up being all stiff.

pardon me, but bullshit. don't all the athletes march at the ceremonies? plus, these people are ATHLETES, I really doubt walking around all day will stiffen them up for the next day, if anything they would be more rested as they would not be following their regular training regimen.

Actually the regular training regimen of most elite athletes the last couple of days before they compete is to do almost nothing except for a bit of stretching.

Why are athletes turning down the flag bearer opportunity?

Because people remember who won gold medals, not the person who carried the flag on TV for two minutes.

Because the one chance the athletes get at gold is something they've likely been working towards, and sacrificing for, their entire life - not carrying the flag.

Pardon me, but what you said is bullshit. Not all of the athletes are at the Olympics for the opening ceremonies. Many countries end only half of their team for the first week and then send the other half for the second week. Also the athletes do get tired from a full day of standing around and doing some walking for the opening ceremonies.

I don't blame any athlete that has to compete that day or the next day from not wanting to carry the Canadian flag or even be at the opening ceremonies.

Hey they can send me. I'm just the opposite. I'm willing to carry the flag since I'm not competing, I don't have to worry about my medal performance.
(Not trying to knock the athletes)

Afterall Vanoc did waste over half a mil to send people people to look at 16 skating ovals around the world and as for me I'll be going for a reason.

If Cherry is so adamant? When doesn't he volunteer?

I'm willing to go to China as well they can pay for my airfare from Van to Beijing then fly me back on the first flight to Van.

Sorry Mod my mistake.

Well why not turn it into a blazer, than no one has the excuse of carrying it for hours on end and hurting their performance.

What a joke

you claim to be an olympic level athlete and a few hours of walking and maybe a little of that time carrying a flag tires you out ?

I could carry the flag and jog 10 kms with it and still wake up the next day fresh as a daisy.
And i do not claim to be an olympic athlete.

I say pull all their funding, and let them attend the olympics as independants if they want to shit on the flag.

What a bunch of pathetic losers...an elite athlete would not even consider a few hours of walking , standing and even some running a warm up IMHO.

Before last years winter triathlon i competed in, i downhill skied all day, and then just did a short run that night of only about 5 kms.
then i competed the next day and took 2nd in the mens solo event.
Then that night i was out dancing till midnight, and the next day i jogged the 12 kms to my office.
i felt great and was not even stiff.
And again i am not an olympic athlete.
if i was training for the olympics i would be in a lot better shape than i am i am sure.
an olympic athlete again IMHO should be able to go for a 20 km run, and need maybe at most 8 hours recovery time to be fine.
its not like during the ceremony's they have to run as hard as they can for 40 kms or anything.
its a frigging ceremony.

2 weekends ago i was in a 3 day karate tournament....i sparred for 6 hours the day before and ran 12 kms the day before as well...just to get myself moving for the competition....and i bet you every other black belt there did the same thing.
if you sit around for a couple days before the competition you are screwed.

may as well eat 5 bigmacs and supersize the fries to
