This July, we profiled New York grad student Jackie Samuel's (unique) side business, which she started to help pay the bills.
Samuel, 29, advertises $1 a minute for cuddling sessions from her Penfield, N.Y., home, which is now known as The Snuggery. It looks like what started small is now a full-fledged business that rakes in up to $260 a day with up to 30 men a week. Samuel told the Henrietta Post that she started cuddling for cash informally (in between selling hugs) years ago. It wasn't until recently that she wanted to make things more official.
She told CNN: "I need some kind of certification or license that says I'm a certified cuddler, but I couldn't find anybody else who was doing what I was doing." Alas, certified cuddling isn't a thing. Instead Samuel set out to cuddle license-free, charging $1 a minute for fully-clothed sessions. Since July, things have expanded.
Samuel has offered new services, like reading bedtime stories, and hired a red-headed associate named Colleen. Even though there's no certificate program, Colleen isn't allowed to cuddle with clients on her own yet. Instead she participates in "double cuddle" sessions with Samuels, which costs a whopping $2 a minute. The money goes toward Samuel's graduate school tuition (which threatened to expel her for the cuddling practices according to the Daily Mail) and to support her son.
Cuddlers must wear clothing and refrain from touching body parts covered by underwear, but Samuel is OK with arousal as she practices the different positions of the "Cuddle Sutra."
The Snuggery's FAQ reads:
Q. What if I become sexually aroused during my session?
A. Don't worry, it happens! Although sexual activity is not permitted, arousal is perfectly normal and should not make anyone feel uncomfortable.
It's unclear how the cuddle business will expand from here. Samuel told CNN that she hasn't yet resorted to traditional advertising yet because, "It's cuddling, either you want it or you don't."
