I would think that most porn stars supplement their income in other areas of the adult industry, that would include modeling, cam work, escorting and exotic dancing. In many cases the last two are how they make most of their money, the porn stuff serves to raise their profile so they can command a higher fee, it is a sort of advertising. That is particularly true for feature dancers on the touring circuit. If you look at the porn business in general the girls are usually paid 500-1000 per scene, sometimes more for "special" acts. But, those scenes take a good chunk of the day to shoot, so unless they are shooting every day they are not going to be making that much money. And if they shoot every day they will get over exposed and demand for their services will dwindle.
There is in general a pipeline that the performers move through. Typically they start out doing stills or solo stuff. Some of those girls then move on to hardcore. In the course of that they do some features/dvds and if successfull transition to doing mostly that. If not then they quietly fade into the sunset after a few months. After about 23 a woman in the porn industry is regarded as "elderly" and there are not too many of them unless they have allready achieved superstar status. Most of the girls doing it appear to have either personal issues (Bipolar disorder seems extremely common in the community) or have no education, both of those things limit the employment opportunities outside of the industry, so doing porn in the short term is an easy way to have (for them) lots of money for a time. Probably most of them get off on the attention they recieve as a result of their public exposure, so doing porn is being an exhibitionist for them.
