Where to go on a first date?

If my best male friend asked me where to take a woman he likes on a first date, I'd suggest a late afternoon walk around Granville Island together. Public neutral space;can't stress how important that is. Lots of interesting stuff to see & look at, a variety of options for either a hot beverage or a great gelato, depending on season. If things go well, then talk about whether you'd like to enjoy dinner together then, or elsewhere at another time, thus leaving her (OR YOU!) the option to both escape early should she choose to. At the same time, it lets her her know you are open to a second date if she is! bbb's suggestion of Stanley Park would work well for all the same reasons.

I always love reading comments by guys generalizing about how/what women think/want. All I can say is good luck with that! Gender isn't the penultimate determiner of an individual's thoughts, wants and needs.

Of course we all have individual needs and wants. However there are general principles that work for the majority of people, and unless I am mistaken, that is what the OP asked for. Let's face it, one can't function in society unless one applies some degree of generalization to people one comes in contact with. It would be impossible to interact if every individual requires discovery from scratch.

+1 on a walk/talk plan with a casual meal maybe thrown in but not mandatory.

I've always been conscious at meals of a few things: I eat really fast (remnants of life in the military) so if we're sharing dessert, she's done after the 2nd bite! And any messy food that might slosh on my face or spew out of my mouth - tho if that happens to you and she laughs, quit PERB cause she's a keeper! ;-). I'm also conscious of anything that's going to taste gross afterwards: after one dinner with someone I'd had a few dates with, I couldn't understand why she didn't seem in the mood to kiss anymore. Afterwards she gave the hint: garlic from Caesar salad killed my breath and she couldn't handle it or figure out how to discretely help me!

Dating is expensive? Yes and no.

It can be as cheap or extravagant as you want it to be. Almost everyone can appreciate the finer things in life. Just throw a bunch of money at something and it almost solves itself. But what if your date isn't all that sophisticated or just has simpler tastes? Going to a wine tasting room is lost on that person and it'll back fire cuz he/she may think you're a snob. Walks around Granville island, craft fairs, farm markets- those are the places that allow two people to really get to know each other. You find out how a person perceives the day-to-day things. Dinner at Hawksworth? What will you do to keep upping the game after that? Better call your banker before you book that flight to Paris for your second date.....

A buddy of mine used this 'move' for lack of a better word.

Gotta preface it a bit description wise. Older, stylish, quick witted, charming sort of in a devilish way and watching women warm up to his charms was almost like watching a date movie. He had skills.

He would always suggest meeting at a pub somewhat close to his place. Meet for a drink and then decide what restaurant they'd go to next. Then leaving the pub, he would say oops, forgot my wallet at home. They would head back to his place and end up shagging. Ordered in pizza and you know the rest.

Apparently it worked haha.

These are my favourite dates! And I'm usually the one organizing them, haha. If a man planned a wine tasting / pottery class / golf date, I would SWOON. Take note

Just as Fillup said, having an activity makes the conversation flow more naturally, and quickly shows where compatibility and chemistry exist. One caveat: tell the lady of any specific attire needs in advance of the date! I'm remembering particularly one date wherein the gentleman tried to take me rappelling in high heels. (I did go home and change. It was one of the best dates of my life!)
