People, situations and conditions change or evolve. Saddam became a demagogue, just as countless rulers have in the past. Very few of us have the benefit and wisdom of foresight, but most of us suffer from a healthy dose of hindsight...

PARIS -- When "Fahrenheit 9/11" was selected for the Cannes film festival, another documentary about George W. Bush was waiting in the wings in case Michael Moore's film wasn't ready in time. "The organizers were keen to include our film in the Official Selection but felt it was politically incorrect to have two anti-Bush documentaries at Cannes," says Jean-Francois Lepetit, whose Flach Film produced "Le Monde Selon Bush" (The World According to Bush).

Directed by seasoned documentary maker William Karel, the 90-minute film could scarcely be more different to Moore's pamphlet that went on to win the Palme d'Or. Karel's style is sober, eschewing humor and stunts in favor of heavyweight interviews.

"Le Monde" is a scathing attack on Bush's first 1,000 days in power, and chronicles the first family's alleged links with the oil and arms industries.

Originally made for French pubcaster France 2, the documentary premiered on television last Friday, but in an unusual move will open theatrically in France on Wednesday. "We wanted to give the film a wider audience," Lepetit explains.

Inspired by journalist-author Eric Laurent's two books on the Bush administration, "Le Monde" is the fifth film by Karel examining American political power. The Tunisian-born Swiss director insists he "adores" America, but chose to make the film because "it's a true story stranger than fiction."

Spending more than eight months battling "the veil of secrecy" surrounding those in office, Karel managed 26 detailed interviews, with personalities including Secretary of State Colin Powell, neo-conservative Richard Perle, former CIA directors James Woosley and David Kay, writer Norman Mailer, academics and journalists. "I was amazed how willing some people were to be interviewed, straight after they had left government and were no longer bound by secrecy laws," Karel says.

The €500,000 ($605,000) film covers many topics, including how the "Christian right Israeli lobby" has influenced U.S. policy in the Middle East and how the Sept. 11 attack gave a "clueless" Bush his raison d'etre -- the "crusade" against terrorism, the "false pretext" under which the second war on Iraq was waged, and the "big lie" linking Saddam Hussein to Sept. 11. The film illustrates how George Bush Sr., first as vice president and then as president from 1988 to 1992, armed and financed Hussein. The Bush family's alleged ties to the Bin Laden clan and Saudi Arabia are also examined.

Karel insists his film is not a French diatribe against America but rather a gathering of eyewitness accounts from Americans who lived through the times. "To think President Richard Nixon was impeached because of three tapes!" Karel exclaims. He hopes the film will be seen in the United States. "None of my films have made it to the U.S., but I'm hopeful that this one will," he says.

I had taken the conscious decision to stay out of this kind of thing on here, because one of you correctly suggested that I was probably too involved in it. However, on this one, I need to post on a few points.

-The British Empire may have been effectively the only ones fighting the Nazis at that point, but the Czechoslovaks, Poles, Belgians, Dutch, and French had strong underground resistance movements that were heavily involved in the fight. Before you declare that part of WWII as a unilateral action opposing the Axis, remember, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand were sovereign nations who chose to fight the Nazis. You do a disservice to all those from those and other nations who fought and died for that worthy cause when you strip away their nation status. Spain was never a part of WWII. Not for one, single day.

"Why do we call police states run by dictators "sovereign nations", and accord them the same respect as democratic countries that observe the rule of law and respect individual rights? Doesn't that tend to denigrate the value of a free society like ours? Let's face it, we are, without a doubt, a better society than, say, Iran, or Sudan, just to name two competitors in the "sovereign nation" category.

A "sovereign nation' run by one man and his gang isn't really sovereign. Its really a captive nation."

I think we can all agree that a democratically elected government counts as a sovereign nation deserving of respect. Unless of course you are the US, who has overthrown such regimes in Iran and Chile, and most recently in Haiti. It wasn't so long ago that the US military forcibly exiled the rightful head of Haiti because 'one man and his gang decided to terrorize the population with an organized, criminal, uprising. I guess Haitians are less deserving of democracy than we are, or even the Iraqis are.

-Saddam Hussein wasn't brought to power by the US. He was ruthless in his path to seizing control of the Iraqi Ba'ath party. He was a brutal dictator from the start, even before the Iranian revolution which prompted the US to take him close to their busoms and arm him. Their was never any intention that Saddam was to use those weapons for self-defense, as you suggest. He was armed with the sole purpose of waging war with Iran. The American's motivation on that one? To gain revenge for the Iranians deposing the American-propped up dictator, the Shah, and for the hostage crisis. No love of democracy there, either.

Call it a global conspiracy, but anti-Bush documentaries are taking over the movie world. The last year brought us films like Fahrenheit 9/11 and Control Room, and a week after the Republican Convention came Hijacking Catastrophe: 9/11, Fear and the Selling of American Empire, written by Jeremy Earp and Sut Jhally.

On October 5, Cinema Politica, a free film series sponsored by Concordia University [see last issue for details] gave Montreal students a chance to experience Hijacking Catastrophe, a new documentary by the Media Education Foundation. For those who agreed with many of Michael Moore’s views in Fahrenheit 9/11, but despised his irresponsible tactics, Hijacking Catastrophe lends more credibility. It focuses on Bush’s false justifications for his government’s spending on the war, but without the fluff and Flint, Michigan.

Hijacking Catastrophe uses accessible imagery, facts, and comments by American intellectuals (such as Noam Chomsky, and 1997 Nobel Peace Prize winner Jody Williams) to examine how the Republican Party has used fear resulting from the 9/11 terrorist attacks to radically change the face of foreign policy. By distracting Americans with a new threat in the form of Iraq, the Bush Administration has enabled a rolling-back of various American civil liberties and social programs. The documentary asserts that Bush is using the war in Iraq to advance American military power, while misleading the people by inciting fear through propaganda.

While Fahrenheit 9/11 kept the audience enthralled with clownish evidence of Bush’s backhandedness using Moore’s own form of comedic propaganda, Hijacking Catastrophe has an approach with more depth. It presents the facts clearly and concisely, using short clips of Bush’s idiosyncratic speeches followed by clever remarks from influential Americans, appealing even to the younger generation through an interview with reggae artist and activist Michael Franti.

The documentary not only focuses on the fatal effects of Bush’s self-serving war, but pays attention to the individual players.
