If you are a real friend you should not be facilitation him smoking. You should help him stop smoking.
My Uncle passed away from lung cancer a few years ago. He had been shot in Kosovo, got stabbed responding to a domestic violence call and got put in a hospital going into a biker bar with out backup. But what finally did him in was this little guy.
I stongly suggest you help him stop. Here is a good place to start
