What's a good daily wage to pay a kid to take care of my cat?

I'm going away on vacation for a few weeks, and have an old cat that needs to be taken care of. The 12 year old girl across the street said she'd take care of my cat, and I was wondering what a fair wage would be.

She would have to give it some arthritis medicine and constipation medicine in the morning, and clean the litter box. Because my cat is old, sometimes it won't poo completely in the litter box and will leave some just outside the litter box as it is walking away. I have towels down for that, and maybe once a week the towels will have to be washed.

In the evening, she would have to give the cat some constipation medicine again and clean the litter box. She's also have to change the water and put out some food.

I was thinking around $10 a day. Is that too cheap?

$10 a day is reasonable. Make it for an hour to give the kitty some brushing or attn. Bring in the newspapers etc.

She's 12 years old and has to come in the morning and also back again in the evening, giving medicine and cleaning the litterbox each time... In the middle of summer.

When I was 12 it would have been highly unlikely for me to have woken up early, AND stopped hanging around with my friends early, for 2 straight weeks of my summer, for $10 a day... unless the person I was working for was a close family friend. (and that was many years ago)

Paying the $10, if found acceptable by both parties, but then forcing the kid to stay there an hour doing menial tasks seems rude to me.

Start with what a service/kennel would charge and then downgrade to what you and her parents feel is fair. Then if she wants to do it you should be good. $10 day seems a little light IMHO.

With that much responsibility and the amount of care your old pussy needs, I think more in the order of $25 a day is reasonable considering gonzo said it was $200 a week at a kennel.

I am used to taking my hounds with me on holidays and paying the extra freight at where ever I am staying. At least I know they are getting a holiday like me ound:

Does this kid have access to your home to take care of your cat? LOL oh man I used to do this when I was about 10 or 11. This guy and his wife had the play boy channel if you have anything you don't want a a nosey kid to see don't leave it out. haha

I took care of a couple of teacher's place for a whole summer. They would take off on trips to Africa, Europe etc. Mowing, gardening and watering were my basic responsibilities.

I found out they were big into making porn and as a 12 year old this was enlightening. Sort of wish I hadn't seen her Guinness World Book of Records Hairy Coochie. They left their Polaroids in the coffee table with their Penthouse Mags.

I'd go with a kennel. Might cost more but you know it will be done with no complications. She might not be as reliable and you don't want your cat missing its meds. Cats do like a bit of socializing despite being somewhat aloof, so I think that it would benefit from being around other people/cats rather than being alone except for maybe an hour a day.

pardner, i'm gonna stick my neck out here, and suggest to you that you shouldn't be paying the neighbour kid anything... you should be taking the cat to the place where they euthanize animals and pay whatever they charge. you are no longer prolonging the poor animal's life... you are prolonging its DEATH. man up and do your duty as a responsible pet owner. jes sayin'

$10/day is way low for the duties the kid has to endure, and let me tell you, making
a cat take its pill isn't as easy as it sounds. plus the smell of cat poop will make anyone gag
to the point of puking. cruel punishment for a 12 yr old iyam, and she'll think of cats in a different light.

at the least, it should be $50/day (since it's an under the table income), but would you really trust a 12 yr old to take care of your beloved pet?
best option would be an animal shelter where it will receive proper care. and what if something goes wrong while the kid is out?
if you can afford a trip, you can surely afford cat care. please be a responsible pet owner.
