What will happen to Sochi now that the Olympics are over.

Wow, just total neglect and decay. Sad. They do not even come in and remove it they just let it become a dump.
Sochi is having the World Cup in 2018. They are also hosting the G8 Summit this year.

After that the villagers will probably steal whatever they can that is worth selling. Then the kids will graffitti whatever is left. IMO.

I thought the first one was for sure, then I saw your notes.. From what I have seen Sarajevo really had the worst looking "leftover" olympics.

Well there was that civil war so Sarajevo can be excused. Beijing, Athens, Barcelona etc. There is a long list of wasteful Olympics spending. Vancouver/Granville Island spent 8 million on that tram from Science World to Granville Island that was only in service for 2 months.

I'm not sure that $8M on a tram can compare to several billion...

But planning for after the games is something Canada has done quite well, for all the games we have hosted but most effectively for Vancouver. All the major venues came with a plan to do something useful with them afterwards so that this list of pictures didn't also include one from us. I knew about Sarajevo and Athens but I'm shocked that in six short years the Beijing facilities are looking like that!

I read that all the stadiums that will be built for the Qatar World Cup will be torn down right after. Seems crazy to even have it there to begin with

The Sochi legacy won't be one of decay. The Russians are actually smart about that. Fisht Stadium will be the grandstands for the Russian F1 race in oct 2015. The Ice Cube where curling was held has already been bought by a UK company and will be disassembled and packed up to be rebuilt somewhere in England. Other buildings on the Seaside cluster are temporary structures as well. The Mountain cluster facilities will be maintained most likely as a training center.

The Athens one looks like one of those artificial rapids they build for the whitewater events. Obviously those are not going to be used after the Olympics, and it probably costs too much to demolish them, so they are just left there.

Those sliding structures probably all rot. It costs a ton to get them ready for use and to keep them in that state, and all for a sport where you can probably list the number of active participants from each country on your fingers in most cases.

There should be some sort of rule, if your sport requires some weird useless structure that no one is ever going to use again to be built especially for it, then it should not be in the Olympics.

I bet it will be one of decay. They town does not have sufficient resort potential to warrant the massive amount of money they have invested in infrastructure there.

Most of what was invested did not go into Sochi itself, the place is still a dump once you get off the gleaming new highways and seawalls.

For $50 BILLION in graft, corruption, payoffs, gangsterism and theft they should be.

Sochi has been a crappy resort town for Russian for hundreds of years and it will revert to being a crappy Russian resort town. Just watch the decay without the world watching.

Tell that to the women ski jumpers who fought so hard to get their sport into the olympics

Sochi will be Russia's major theme park as well. Opening after the para-lympics are finished. The Russians have done a great job with what they've done. It will be a world class training center built for Russian Athlete's. Nordic and Alpine events. It was always a resort center and will continue to be so. 60% of the onsite buildings are removable most have already been sold. Other buildings will be repurposed. F1 grandstands for the Russian grand prix. Etc.and other events. The Russian model of these games will show how things need to be done in the future.
Great post! Winter olympics, f1, fifa world cup, this place will not be disused or wasting away anytime soon.

At most there will be 4 matches for the World Cup. People have been going to Sochi for summer vacations, it was never known as a winter resort area. A Russian official claimed that only 1 billion was tax payer funded, the rest was private money.
