Thought you said you weren't pissing on them?
OK, maybe I was a little premature when I said I wasn't pissing on them. I'll rephrase that with I'm not suggesting anything punitive for them just that I'm disgusted that they made a series of VERY bad choices and they get bailed out. Lets say things were very different and this had a pooning angle and had nothing to do with careless smoking. The dad is out cruising the streets with the family's only vehicle, picks up a vice cop and has the mini-van seized. Now he can't drive himself or the other employed family members to their jobs. Would people be offering up vehicles or chauffeur services? I very much doubt it.

Please show me direct, specific examples of them trying to blame someone else for what happened.
Comments from the mom....."always careful with the smoking", "everyone who smoked did it outside", "we always covered up the butts with snow".

Obviously all that was bullshit since they're house is now a pile of ash.

As are those self-righteous people on the sidelines mocking people for making mistakes, and shitting on those stepping up to help.
I can't speak for others but I'm not mocking them so much as I'm disgusted that in a family of at least 4 people over 18 not one of them was responsible enough to make sure they had insurance and decided that smokes were more important. I'm also not shitting on those people who've decided to donate. If you re-read my comments I was "what to do with people.......". If you or anyone else want to shell out their cash or goods so be it.

Do you think the family doesn't know they were dumb and careless?
Don't know, but so far all thats been reported was the "oh woe is us" angle.

Bartdude said:
What the hell do you care that other people are willing to overlook the family's carelessness to provide some help?
Honestly, at the end of the day my care factor (for any side of this debate) equals zero. They can burn down their next house, the residents fo Calgary can bail them out.....really don't give a shit. The intent of my original post and follow up comments were to express my visceral reaction to the situation. Give it a day or so and I'll have moved on to something else to be disgusted about.

Precisely what joy do you take in sitting in front of your shiny new Sony laptop, heaping scorn on these people?
No joy whatsoever and you'll fail to guilt me by injecting my recent purchase into the debate.

I know what a legend you are on here
I'm a legend    does that come with any benifits?

But you have no place telling others that they can't help them or feel sorry for them either.
Again, I'm not trying to tell anyone what they should or shouldn't do. If people want to donate to them fine, that's their choice. Its just interesting that the media has decided to turn this family into the charity cause de jour. The following day there was an arson fire in Calgary which has meant 6 or so families have lost the use of their condos for the next month. To the best of my knowledge no one's stepped up to provide them with free/emergency shelter, offer to replace anything damaged by a fire that clearly wasn't their fault, offered to repair the building at no cost.

they wouldn't need our help then would they?
isn't that a double-standard?

people who help themselves don't get any help,
but people too stupid to get insurance get tons of it?

and despite what you might think,
its not like the insurance company arrives
and magically replaces all your stuff etc ...

Thats exactly the point, by foregoing a few cartons of smokes these idiots could have avoided the entire tragedy.

It is a double standard. And that's why I think these people should be given maybe the bare minimum, but have to start from scratch. Maybe that will teach em.

As far as insurance companies magically replacing your belongings, I've had my house ransacked before. I've been through the claims process and stuff. But at least I had a right to demand the insurers to pay up. If I didn't have any coverage, I'd be SOL.

you're kind of arguing my point for me ...

bottom line, no one likes to see anyone suffer or be in distress,
but i cannot think of one reasonable excuse for not having the
minimum insurance for belongings and liability.

maybe the Salvation Army should start selling insurance ... would
make a lot more sense since they are typically the first responsders
for many families.
