Hey everybody. I'm currently designing a website for a friends drafting company...and with all the new advancements in monitors and resolution, i'm not too sure what the general audience is using for their resolution...

I just need some feedback

I'm not sure if i set this poll thingy up properly so here goes...

Don't desogn to one resolution

If you design a site to one specific resolution, you are guaranteed to make that site either too high/wide or too small to fit on the screens of many viewers. In some cases that might just be enough for a viewer to go elsewhere.

You should be able to design a site that will dynamically resize itself to the resolution of just about any viewer's screen (exception - some small handhelds such as Palm or Blackberry).

Think about it.

Try to design to the lowest resolution possible without compromising your site. You will make your site accessible to the greatest number of people. I would recommend 800x600 or 1024x768... even though I personally use 1900x1440 resolution on my screen :).

I think 1024x768 would be the best compromise.

if possible, make the 'home page' lower resolution so it loads ... if it takes ages to load I'm just going to stop it and move on.

then leave out the fancy graphics and noisy music ... especially if this is for a business environment -- if i have to show this to my boss or co-workers it shouldn't sound like a porn site!

finally, make it easy to navigate, make 'menus' self-explanatory and give people the option of selecting higher resolution graphics for detail and presentation.

and don't forget that most browsers block java and pop-ups so try to avoid them as well ...

Still lost in the '60s
My stats show that 20% of the visitors to my website still use 800 x 600, so I would design to that spec, unless I'm targeting demographics who are more likely to use high-tech gear than average consumers.
