I know when I walk through your concrete jungle called Vancouver, I'm amazed at the amount of beautiful women from every ethnic background.
I'm stuck up in the Mountains and don't have much human contact....But a group of women from the U.S. and Europe have arrived here for the "True Ranch Experience"....They are helping with the Farm routines and they asked me....
"You Canadians are a well mannered good looking bunch, but what do you think makes a true Canadian?"
It seems they want to try to blend in....And the way they dress and act, that may never be possible.
So I told them...A Canadian likes strong alcohol and is willing to pay 80% tax to buy it...We are perfectly capable of having sex in a Canoe, without loosing the paddles.
We like our Monopoly money because we tip the stripper by the colour...Because it's dark in most clubs.
We view buying coffee at Starbucks ,as cross border shopping.
We are perfectly capable of thawing out our sex lube over the flame of a Coleman Stove, without burning our fingers.
The Northern Canadian chooses his girlfriend in the fall time...He likes to have a weight appropriate girlfriend to warm the bed, in -40 conditions.
We do not live in Igloos...But will charge Europeans 300 a night ,to stay in a hotel.. built from ice in Quebec.
We will vote in Howdy Doody as Prime Minister, and use a Beaver as a National Emblem...But when invited to join a War....Will fight it single handed as a nation...Then apologize.
We will thank a bank machine for giving us the funds to buy a ticket to a Hockey Game....Which we only attend to view the fights on ice.
We are the only nation that touches three of the Earths oceans, with a boreal forest second only to Russia, and have some of the largest deposits of natural resources on the planet.....Yet we let the world dictate what we can charge for them...and try to compete with other nations that have almost no economy, or pollution control....Then when they are in trouble, we will donate wheat to those very countries ,that had competed with us on the world markets
We won't let smokers within 6 meters of a public building, but we will give drug addicts a safe place to use narcotics....And every year a Veteran of any of our Nations wars, must prove to Veterans Affairs that the arm or leg he lost in battle...Hasn't spontaneously grown back to keep his disability pension.
We are a very odd bunch of people clustered into a very large land mass, yet the price of real estate has soared through the roof...Yet we only use up less than 12% of the available land mass of our great nation.
Even though I shake my head at times...I'm very proud of who we are..I am a Canadian.

What defines you...or us ...As Canadian?

We are a very insecure nation and we should be grateful that we share a border with the United States of America.

I long for the days 50 years ago when we actually stood for something instead of being a bunch of self-righteous hypocrites.

Our embracing of diversity is what makes us Canadian..Every one of us comes from imagen stock or imagrated here ..including the first Imagrents aborigines.
.
I find it sad that so may Canadian .still complain about Imagrent of any nationality..These days it's the
Asian and east Indians. .and it the Italian. .german..British. ..ext from Imagrent families that are doing the complaining .

As for this great country with every thing we want ...and we give if away for a few dollars.. Instead of manufacturing it our selves. . And then more people would come .more work would be made and we would have .ore taxes for the government's to wast...but still the country would grow like it did in the 50s.

That's what makes us a Canadian..complaining but not getting off our ass and making the nessisare changes ..Let some one else do it...Get me Another beer ..hockey is on.

Don't let the spelling and grammar fool you ..
I am third generation Canadian on my mons side.
German Imagrent father . And come from English .. Norwegian .german on mom's side..
They all came here and embraced this country as their own..And I am proud to say I am a Canadian ..would not want any other country to be my home.

But there are things wrong..which can be fixed very easily with just a change in our Canadian attitude ...and I don't watch much hockey or drink beer. Just saying "A"

The Good:
We're still well liked internationally
We're funnier than Americans, less chauvinistic than Aussies
Less gun violence
better beer (although US craft breweries are pretty damn good)
still the greatest hockey nation on the planet
natural geographic beauty
leaders in scientific research despite lack of funding
open expression of diversity (although...see racism)

The Bad:
Racism is an undercurrent - sometimes I prefer that racist Canadians be more outspoken so it would expose the problem
Resource based economy - we can't seem to get away from this. manufacturing in Canada is not a low-cost proposition
inferiority complex - Canadians seem to have to get famous elsewhere before we recognize them
Oligopolies in business - lack of competition means we pay higher prices for a lot of things - cell phones, internet, air fares, cable

Back in the 70s my high school teachers and university profs were so anti American it was pathetic.

They weren't pro Canadian which might have justified it a bit, they were just plain idiots. Funny how perspective changes everything. You realise how fucked up the people you looked up to were.

All so most Canadians suffer from claustrophobia
We live in the biggest country in the world..We have a population smaller then California ...or even the city of Argentina. .and to or three others ..And so many say we don't have room for any more people to come in.

not sure if claustrophobia is the right term here.
I've always thought that Canada has a fair policy in terms
of letting immigrants in. I just don't agree with the job placement policy.

ie: educated immigrants working in menial jobs.
you see them at convenient stores, driving taxis or sweeping floors.
engineers, doctors, teachers, etc.
am I to believe that Canada is far superior in those fields?

We're not the biggest country in the world. Anyway, much of the country isn't habitable.

Argentina is a country, not a city.

Yes because unity and patriotism are only ideals and thoughts that are American. Very good ignatius..
Yes well that wasn't exactly the point. Overt pride in sporting accomplishments is something I have found particularly virulent in America. The former Soviet Union also used it for propaganda purposes. Unity and patriotism are fine in limited doses. But when someone sums up being Canadian as celebrating a sporting accomplishment I find that trite at best

If you only think that the gold medal win in 2010 on Canadian soil was only a sporting accomplishment then you'll never understand it. I guess 35 million Canadians feeling pride in their country means nothing to you.
Sad really.

Peacekeeping, response to world crisis. Many Canadian defining galvanizing moments happened on the battlefield or on the sporting field.

We'be been world leaders in medical development and scientific discovery. But I suppose that's all to "Trite" for you. Isn't it pacific?
I'm all for peacekeeping, scientific development and medical discoveries. Your comparison to Canadians uniting on the battlefield and sporting field trivializes those who actually fought and died on the battlefield. I'll thank the unknown soldier over Sidney Crosby any time

If all you have to be proud of is hockey, you don't have much.

Peacekeeping and being a neutral voice is long dead thanks to warmongering Harper.

We have had many canucks make accomplishments in many areas but nothing outstanding in comparison to other countries.

Blind patriotism is for fools and PR companies.
