The few stretch marks can not describe the journey of motherhood for us women. It is a time we truly feel ourselves, and what is inside becomes so apparent, and the intensity of the gift of life is abundant within our own flesh, that it is unmistakable.
Some of us go our first few months of pregnancy struggling to hold down food, or water. We experience the changes taking place within us with a certain fear, and awe. We wonder when the nausea will subside, and await the next trimester so that we can continue with life a little more normally.
As our children grow, we expand to accommodate them. Life becomes something greater than ourselves. We realize we truly are not alone. It finally means something to hold another being so close, and so powerfully. The second trimester is soon over, and the third. It really didn't take so long afterall!
Then, they arrive, and boy is it an arrival! We quickly learn how to wake up at all hours of the day and night. We battle fatigue, and their hiccups, we nurse them, or bottle feed, or both! We change diapers, we wash clothes so many times a day its hard to count. We give up all of the things we enjoy doing, to try to sneak in naps so that we may have just the basic necessities and energy to keep going... They wear us out, they go through growth spurts where it seems that they can not stop being hungry. They NEED us. There is no other option but to push on, and fulfill their needs, even when it means going to the store in our sweatpants with bags under our eyes just to grab that extra pack of wipes.
Some of us continue to go to school, and work. Those are the moms that know time is all about management. We play with them, we laugh, we hold them, we worry every time they get feverish, or every time there is a sitter when we must leave. We pour our hearts into their education. We teach ABC's, and colors, and how to hold our hand when we are out. They ask us questions, and we try our best to explain. We realize what "starting out" in the world is, because we see it first hand. We remember our childhood even more by their curiosity.
Day by day, they change. One day, they finally say "I love you", after the countless hours, the lost sleep, the money, the worries... and you realize, you wouldn't trade it for anything. They are your children, your accomplishment, carefully crafted and watching every move you make.
To all the mommas out there, have the happiest mothers day. Relax, if you can, and give yourself a pat on the back. Its a full time job for life. You deserve the respect one would give to a goddess. No stretch marks could mar your natural radiance after such a wonderful task. Its beyond cool to be a mom. You know how to GET IT DONE!
