What is it like inside a nightclub?

I've never been inside one. Everything I know about them are from movies and Youtube and from what I can tell, they're not for me. It's mostly the music and the people seem like they try hard to be cool. I listen to classic rock and metal and can't stand those generic EDM stuff. I wouldn't say I'd never go to one since I'm only 24 right now and there are lots of opportunities to go but the chances are slim. Nevertheless I'm still curies to how it's like inside and if it's like what they show on movies.

It’s not my scene either but I’ve been to a few. Nothing resembling ones like in movies in Vancouver or Victoria, in my limited experience. Been to some huge ones in Mexico and Asia with enormous dance floors, high ceilings, expansive tiered floor plans, lavish bottle services, trippy architecture and lighting. These places had cover charges greater than the average citizen makes in a day. Nothing like that in Vancouver I’ve seen or heard of but definitely in the states or back east.

Well back in the day ...
Think the Anchor, Dicks on Dicks, etc, these were pretty fun spots. Guys and gals out having fun. And if you were 'right' well you could get lucky.
Prior to that I took part in the really big bar scene. Anyone from Alberta remember the Kingsway,? 1000+ folks under one roof. Can't recall the other one on the south side of Edmont, but I do remember 3 bands playing that one room one at each end, one in the middle.
I can't remember the last time I set foot in what would be considered a night club - does the Commodore count? But those were places where I had a blast, met a lot of folks and my fair share of women who also wanted a good time.
I think many folks who hang out here, regardless of age would have had as much fun as I did in all those great old places.

I have no information about the current club scene. I've been to nightclubs in Vancouver 4 times, all of them decades ago. The clubs I visited no longer exist, but since you got me started reminiscing, I'll bore you with my recollections anyway. Only real Vancouver old-timers will read anything familiar:
  • One time to Isy's on West Georgia to watch (get this!) the Everly Brothers. I was with a high school buddy. Isy's called itself a supper club. We were just old enough to get in, and thought we were quite sophisticated, in our cheap suits and ties, sitting at a table eating some forgettable but pricey meal.
  • Another time to Isy's to celebrate something I've long forgotten with a bunch of UBC buddies. No suits and ties by then. We saw a mother-daughter stripper act. It was fun.
  • A couple of times to the Penthouse looking for SPs to pick up. I was fresh out of the bush, young and poor, the drinks were expensive, and the SPs were way, way out of my price range. The Penthouse sometimes did have good strippers with real acts, not just writhing around a pole.
As for the current club scene, my guess is that Charlee called it right.

The Kingsway. Wasn’t the biker gang that hung out there the Rebels? The Riv had bands and Convention Inn south did as well.

Isy’s supper club, fond memories ?

It wasn’t a night club in the sense that the OP is thinking. More of a show bar like Gary Taylor’s or The Cave.

Once, (for New Years 2015 I believe? Maybe 2014?) I went to a nightclub in London. It was a strict 1920s theme, in a huge hidden warehouse underground. There was a bebop band, a speakeasy bar, crap tables, smoking allowed, everything. It literally felt like it was the 1920s. People were dancing, laughing, and everyone looked incredible.

THAT was fun. THAT was amazing. It was like LARPing. There's never anything like that here, though.

I've gone to them to see bands or artists that I like, but I've always wished they were playing somewhere else. Almost every time I've been in a nightclub I get asked if I know where to get drugs. I'm also not big on paying 12 bucks for a well highball or a Heineken.

I feel like a lot of the posters haven't been to one in 20 years, and then there's a childish response thrown in there, so hopefully I'm of some help...

If your music genre of choice is classic rock and metal, you have no place in a nightclub. Not too sure what you mean by "people seem like they are try hard to be cool"? Perhaps that is just your interpretation or projection based on a limited perspective (ie. pictures without context, random movie scenes). I think everyone experiences it a little differently. Perhaps Charlee's experience is something she experienced herself, and while I can agree to that to some degree, it isn't the only thing. I've gone to see some of my favourite DJs with a good group of friends and it's a blast.

The gist of it for me is, you drink a little, dance a little, laugh a lot, be in the company of those you care about. Having said that, I think the club that you actually go to matters a lot, which is why I base my nightclub outings around the DJ playing. Nightclubs are naturally grounds for guys trying to pick up girls, and if you go to a club with no cover, chances are it's going to be mostly dudes trying to be predators. Vancouver clubs are often worse than those in other major cities around the world, but Vancouver's club scene is pretty weak anyway. My best club experiences are by far in Europe, followed by the 'middle to high-end' clubs in East Asia (ie. Seoul, Hong Kong) and the States (LA, NY, Vegas), and.... Vancouver is pretty far down the list.

tl;dr make sure you enjoy the music and go with people you like... usually a recipe for a good time regardless if it's a nightclub or not anyway

Stick with escorts and mp's ,much less fustrating in the long run. Save your social money for concerts i small venues with friends, eg the rickshaw or the commedore...nothing better than seeing an up and commer in a small place. Wear ear plugs..WHAT!?!?

Last time I went to a nightclub was when Luv-a-Fair was closing in March 2003. It had been open since 1976. I was getting a bit too old for nightclubs even at that time but I had been going there for 15 years and it played the best alternative and punk music. In the early 1990s, Graceland a block over on Richards and Drake wasn't too bad either for that, as was The Twilight Zone in Gastown. And then The World at Richards and Pacific was a great afterhours that spun pretty much the same music and was open until 7am. They only served Jaegermeister and Coke at an inflated $7 each as their alcoholic beverage and it was as bad as it sounds.

Nightclubs now just don't have the niche appeal they once had because this city has become so vanilla. Vancouver lacks the character it once had not too long ago and you can thank the 2010 Olympics for that.

You're not missing a thing!

I don't understand how you begin your response saying you haven't been to a nightclub since 2003 and then continue with what I quoted?

I've been to a few. Rarely had a good time. The fact that I had to pound back more than a few drinks just to tolerate it tells you how I felt when inside one. Drinks too pricey, stuffed like sardines at the bar, having to shout over the music just to talk to someone. If you're extroverted, like wasting money and love dancing...then definitely go to one! If you're an introvert like myself, it's the stuff of nightmares.
