What is an air mile really worth?

I am in the process of booking a flight to Asia and have the opportunity to earn a large number of air miles with Delta. I always use Delta and have accumulated a few thousand air miles.

The other option would be to book with another seller for $200 less, but not receive any air miles. Any advice would be appreciated.

You get 6387 miles each way flying Vancouver to Hong Kong so a total of 12754 and it costs 15,000 points to get a free ticket to Calgary so it should be worth it.

I use China Airlines alot and have the " DYNASTY GOLD FLYER",and it takes 30 days to get a free flight and with the black out dates such as New Year/Cristmas dates!

Getting Air Miles is the best way to tell big business about your lifestyle and the way you live. Air Miles through their mother company Alliance Data and LoyaltyOne knows where and how many times you travel every year, you're preferred hotel, what DVD/CD you buy, the type of entertainment you love, when you buy groceries in Safeway, etc. Great marketing tool, they have info on 70% of households in Canada. Their database is priceless.

Value of an airmile

While this may still be a topic for discussion, you can buy extra airmiles if you need to for $.30 cents ea. Just check the airmiles website.

When you check say a hotel rack rate though, the airmiles used to book one night for example does not calculate out to be .30 cents becuase airmiles always seems to use more points than it would normally take.

Priceless

For me the value of and air mile is priceless...

Every time I fly I use my air miles.. to BC, to Mexico, to Europe, and on and on...
I've never had an issue using my miles, but I do plan in advance to get the most value
I can't remember the last time I actually paid for a plane ticket.
And I get the miles buy spending money I'd have spent anyways.
I also manage to get some of my X-mas shopping done through the Airmiles site.

BTW I use my gold airmiles along with my Mastercard and often get double if not
tripple points...

I also have Aero points, but those seem mostly useless.

When flying in the US I usually fly out of Seattle, it's always been at least $300 cheaper (which pays for gas & parking) and on my way back I can stop and do some shopping.

A while ago I was looking at using my continental points to fly to a southern US state, I was happy to find that it's the same amount of points to fly out of Vancouver as it is to fly out of Seattle.

Also; if you stick with certain hotel chains and airlines, their points are transferable.

I think I'd rather save the $200 instead of ff miles.
Unless you travel a lot, and will be able to actually use them, to go somewhere you want.

I go for the 2% cash back now with my credit card.

I fly to South America or Europe for 50k miles. Which in your situation is about $500 or so to earn in cost difference between the no miles and miles bookings. To me $500 to get to south America or Europe is a "bargoon" considering I usually pay $1300-1600 to fly to Brazil and around the same to Europe. Not mention quicker airline status qualification and the free upgrades/bonus points that come with it.

Having said that, Im really fucking pissed at Delta and their merging of the Northwest program, they now have a penalty if you book on miles and you're flying in less than 3 weeks. Costs an extra $150. Ive flown to Europe and South America in the past on less than 24 hour notice with NWA miles (usually flying Continental when it used to be Skyteam)!
