The Rift- Walter Jon Williams.
I've read a couple times since it was published in '99.
Very well written characters.

- I wonder, said Hermes, what it would be like if animals had human intelligence.

- I'll wagera year's servitude, answered Apollo, that animals - any animal you like - would be even more unhappy than humans are, if they were given human intelligence.

And so it begins: a bet between the gods Hermes and Apollo leads them to grant human

"Divine Sex: Liberating Sex from Religious Tradition" by Philo Thelos

"Divine Sex examines every Biblical reference to human sexual practice. By using tools of modern scholarship, evidence is produced to show that the Bible does not actually say what generations of professional religionists have told us. The Bible does not forbid all sexual activity other than monogamous heterosexual intercourse. Instead it treats us to a wide range of God-approved, and sometimes even God-supplied, sexual possibilities that the church has never told us about. In fact, the most famous erotic poem in history, is actually a book of the Bible!"

"God is the Architect both of human sexuality, and of sexual pleasure. The passion, pleasure and possibilities of sex are His gift to humanity. Like any proud parent, Father God is pleased and honored when His kids delight in His gift/ God made sex to be fun. He is not embarrassed nor is He angered when we enjoy it. Sex as God designed it to be is truly Divine."

"From polygamy and concubinage, to prostitution, to masturbation, to oral sex, to nudity - and all else besides - this study of what the Bible actually says, and does not say, will surprise, perhaps elate, and we believe will liberate the reader from the sex-stifling effects of church dogma."

"Sex without religious baggage. Sex without guilt and shame. Sex as the Creator meant it to be. Divine Sex."

A question for other readers. Why is it that a book gets high ratings on Amazon, but when i read it i find it mediocre.
For example i read The Relic by by Preston and Child it has a 4.5 stars out of 5 from 1,121 reviewers, but i found it less than stellar. I understand there is some subjectivity from person to person but this is extreme, are the ratings rigged or what? By the way the made a movie out of the book that came out at 1997, that i thought was a bit better than the source material.
Plus i never understood the praise for Stephen King's work? I am not trying to start an argument, just looking for objective answers.

Just finished reading this novella from the great Iranian prose writer Sadeq Hedayat . The Iranian Franz Kafka whom he admired.
It's a nightmarish dream about murder, opium induced hallucinatory madness, despair, and a kind of convulsive fear of sexuality.
You follow the main protagonist suffering from an illness drifting from consciousnesses into unconsciousness. And I loved it.

This is exactly my issue with the movies, & why I will never watch any of them. I started on the series with "The Killing Floor" when it was a new release! I just finished 'Night School", which is set just prior to 9-11, and it's terrific. Currently, I am rereading a Dean Koontz from many years ago. What I want to read next is still in hardcover; Tad Williams' "The Witchwood Crown".

I grew up watching 'the Last Waltz' over and over, and I've always had a soft (and wet) spot for Robbie. So mysterious and mischievous, I've never grown out of that crush and I've followed a lot of what he's done. With your recommendation I think I've found my next beach read. Thanks!

Awesome! I hope you enjoy it. For a bit of balance, I read Levon Helm's bio This Wheel's On Fire right after I finished Robbie's book, and it is also a compelling read, filled to the brim with great yarns. Happy reading!

I AM NUJOOD, AGE 10 AND DIVORCED - The true story of Nujood Ali, a 10-year-old Yemeni girl sold by her father to a man more than twice her age. She was raped and beaten on her wedding night and further abused by him and his mother before running away and seeking legal help. She was Yemen's youngest divorcee, but things have not changed for young girls in Yemen, and other Muslim countries that see child brides as a status symbol.
