I saw this yesterday and was appalled by what I saw. I did some digging and I think there are a few things at work here. First is the obvious, a bit of a moral vacuum developing in China. Second, there was an incident a little while back where a good Samaritan helped someone in need and was wrongly blamed for that person's injuries and was also ruled to be responsible for all the health care costs of the injured. Thirdly, there are a lot of street scams that prey on the empathy of do-gooders.

I watched this video over a year ago when I got weak and decided to lapse on a news blackout I had imposed on myself for a while and ended up in tears over the state of the world. It sprang to mind immediately when I saw the similarities in how this hit and run toddler story was reported. I found it interesting that it took me a minute to find it because several of the "major" news sites had lost their copyright and no longer included the video in their articles....

this kind of thing happens, but not as often and not in the escalating fashion that the media likes to represent when they run these stories.
I find it horrifying too.. but not so horrifying any more. I am not desensitized, but rather than let it depress and terrify me every time I watch a sensational news broadcast I remind myself that what I am being shown is selective... and there are a thousand other things going on that were not covered in the news for very specific reasons that have nothing to do with giving us any perspective of what is going on in the world.

Alix I was just thinking about that as I was reading this and was going to link it but refreshed first and saw you beat me to it.

Sadly these are not isolated cases and have become more common over the last 10 years, sometimes googling out of curiosity can get you more info than you wish to know.

I saw a headline about this on the front page of the Globe & Mail early today and followed it up on the internet when I got home. All I can say is that I am sickened and disgusted by the drivers who hit that little girl and completely revolted by the people who walked past and gave no aid to her.

I pray the little girl lives and recovers fully.

I'm not surprised....a godless country that is only interested in the all might yuan or dollar....mind you, I bet this would also happen in Vancouver's downtown, if that victim was a homeless person or some whacked out addict.

I highly recommend you try googling Michael Best on the issue of sensational news reporting too. I don't know where the truth really lies in all of this, but I know that more incidents being reported on certainly doesn't mean that there are definitely more instances of indifference to our fellow man happening out on the street today

Actually BITD when I lived in North Vancouver.....an elderly chap had a heart attack on a Skytrain platform.....I think it was the Granville St location.....he dropped to the ground and everybody stepped over him and left him to himself....those people were of course worried about getting home on time and had no concearn....the old guy died on the spot with people stepping over him like he was an inconvenience.....Calgary is a cold city in the winter....Vancouver is cold all year long.....visciously cold all year long with people who would rather spit on you than smile at you.

it might just be my professional training but, I run out as a first responder to car accidents... once every couple of years, when I still took the bus I had a couple of incidents where I felt it was important to notify the driver that someone needed care, and even before I had training I remember one very disturbing walk that took me passed a coffee shop on Main south of Broadway... where two kids were od'd sitting at a table out front. I didn't know what was wrong with them, they seemed to be kind of asleep but grey and on further inspection one had probably thrown up on the ground before passing out.. the girl in the coffee shop was aware of them but didn't realize how critical it was until I had her call an ambulance immediately and all of a sudden it registered on her face that things were fucked up.

Sometimes people don't know what to do. I don't think it is cruelty but it was really scary when I realized those kids were dying.. I wanted to keep going but noticing made me feel like I was responsible if I kept walking

the silver lining is that with China's justice system, if they do catch the guys, they will quickly become involuntary organ donors, rather than being coddled as the victims as they would be in Canada

Since no one will address the real issue here, I will take the heat. I have a good friend who works for a large multinational company who was sent to China about 2 years ago to develop the market.

I asked for his opinion on this video and he was not the least bit surprised that this occurred. He added that this is by no means an isolated incident. He says people there have little to no empathy for their fellow human being. He said that the treatment of animals there would make your stomach turn. Isn't Communism great.

We should all keep in mind that every year we allow thousands of people to emigrate to Canada with this exact same mindset. This is the demographic that we are building our country with. I cringe when I think of what Canada will look like in 20 years.

Thanks for getting an insight from your friend.
The person got hit by the van could have been seen as Waidiren, which means someone not from the local area.
In a large city in china, those who are from the city often look down on people from rural areas, and often that I-am
-better-than-rural-people sentiment lead people to dehumanize them. This process of othering is not unique in China.

I personally don't want this discussion to be seen from west vs east, god vs godless, or any other easy black and white aspects. Is video is so shocking that I don't even summarize my mind what to learn from it.

Then again, Canada did just elect the Harper Conservatives who are continuing to wipe out all social services, a process that the Chrétien Liberals started to do in the the 1990's. Soon we will have a nice dog eat dog society with no social welfare or safety nets for those who fail to keep up...The movie: Inside Job describes the greed of the ruling and corporate elites that lead in the end to people not caring for their fellow beings...this incident is just the thin edge of the wedge...IMHO

Glad I won't be around in 20 years...

RH
What social services have the Conservatives wiped out? The ineffective bloated government monopoly called the Canadian Wheat Board is the only recent program that I can think of.

Welfare or safety nets should be limited to those who are elderly, mentally or physically incapable of providing for themselves. Excluding seniors that would probably be 1% of the population.

The little girl died today.
I really hope that she was not frightened and did not suffer before she passed away.

I do wonder why her mother was m.i.a. for so long when this little girl initially wandered off.. When I was a kid I was a demon for wandering off, but my mom always came swooping in out of nowhere within five minutes or so regardless of how lost I managed to get myself or how crowded/busy/loud the place was when I did it. Not a judgment call on the mom at all, it's just weird that no one really mentioned whether the mom had been looking for her child or if she had noticed she was even missing before the garbage man ultimately helped the toddler or what.
