Make sure you actually swipe the card or make sure that you actually see the card and matching photo ID if you punch it in manually.
Over the last few days, I've been getting numerous calls from young men wanting to book an appointment and pay in advance with their card. The prepayment itself is not unusual. However, once I mention that they will still need to physically show me the card, along with photo ID, nobody is interested anymore.
I'm pretty sure there are a number of people out there at the moment who have access to other people's card numbers (but don't have authorization to use the card).
I had one young man pay in advance last week - but when he showed up, he had 'forgotten' his wallet.
Since he had texted me his card information earlier, he still had it on his phone. I simply asked for the billing information, and called BMO to do an address verification. It didn't match up, so I sent him on his way and returned the funds.
Always ensure you are processing a card that belongs to the person you are seeing. It seems so basic, but it is easy to forget due diligence when the finances are seemingly cared for and you are both eager to get on with the fun!
