Let me first say that I lived in the South Cambie area for over 25 years. First Translink rams the new line down Cambie not for the benefit of Vancouverites but for those who live in Richmond and now City Council is looking into allowing Big box retailers to open on Southwest Marine. Why doesn't the City develop Kent Ave and then allow the Walmarts/Cdn Tires etc to build down there ? Customers could access the stores from Oak/Cambie/ Main and Fraser and the noise would be kept down because the stores would be off the main drag.

You'll really impress me if you can tell me what "33", "66" and ''77" are in reference to ;)
I'll chime in even though I have only lurked in this thread so far.

It's been a VERY long time, but here goes.
33: Loss Prevention
66: change request
and 77: calling all male staff to catch a shoplifter. (I think?)

(while Mr. Louie wasn't technically the founder of London Drugs he was responsible for its current business model)
You're right, it was Sam Bass in 1945; he eventually sold it to Daylin, an American firm in the late Sixties. Louie later bought it from Daylin in '76.

In my little world, I have no problem walking the talk. I buy from Canadian, preferably as small as possible, merchants as much as I can. Does it cost more? Yes, but that's not a problem for me. Would I hold it against anyone for shopping at a Wall Mart? No, the cost of living doesn't exactly give most folks much choice. Save-On, London Drugs, and Rona give you decent product selection. Being in Burnaby, Hastings and Kingsway provide you with a ton of options to support small business. Now, finding Canadian made products is a whole different story.....

i shop Canadian as much as i can ... but what's the use? ALL the shit is made in China these days and it doesn't matter which retailer you go to it just has a different label and is made over there.

so how do you actually then 'shop' Canadian?

I try to shop at Canadian retailer as much as possible;) . However, when Walmart is selling the same item $5 to 10 cheaper than other Canadian retailer how can blame someone from shopping at Walmart:) .

Well, would you rather buy from London Drugs and see the profit turn into investment dollars that may go towards opening another store or sponsor events or charities in B.C. or shop at Wal Mart so that they can open another store in Buttfuck, Idaho?

Same with dealing with banks. Would you rather bank with Royal who turned their back on the GVO/VCC golf tourney, whose proceeds went to charity, yet had no trouble sponsoring the hockey arena in North Carolina or deal with Van City?

I know, I know, in the big scheme of things it really means fuck all but in my little world, I'm doing my part and that's all that matters to me!

RBC/Royal have provided sponsorship for the a canadian olympic athletes. Money talks and rules in our society today. Whether it is business or justice if have the money you will get what you want. Sponsoring an arena, I thought you have to bid for your name to be used on the facility. I guess Royal's bid was not high enough to secure a name/sponsor the Vancouver arena.

I think 77 should be a 44. I heard the clerk call it out as a shoplifter was
running out the door the last time I was at the LD on Vic/33rd.

That LD sure gets robbed alot. So far I have seen them chase
someone about four times this year so that probably happens alot more.

Ghost - I think that London Drugs is at Victoria and 41st. Was talking to computer dept guy there, they chased a guy 8 blocks recently after he snatched a small HP photo printer.

As for Wal Mart - they are obviously giving shoppers what they want or they wouldn't be the world's top retailer. In the final analysis, everyone wants to save a buck where possible, its in our nature. Saving money on your everyday purchases at WalMart will leave you more money for the pooning budget. For those who don't like Walmart - go to Woodwards or Eatons. Oh, I forgot, those two went broke.
