After spending four years and literally hundreds of thousands of dollars, hiring a world class architect to design a state-of-the-art green facility the likes of which exist nowhere else on the planet, acquiring a sizeable piece of insanely over-priced Vancouver real estate, and jumping through every hoop that the iron fisted Vancouver city council imposed upon them, Wal Mart is turned down on their development application for the individual idealogical reasons of some council members. Councillor Tim Louis went so far as to call the retailer a corporate criminal. He went on to say "The largest contributor to the Bush regime in his re-election campaign was Wal-Mart." What in the name of fuck does this have to do with anything?
The store was meant to set a new standard for environmentally-friendly big box stores, and had been specifically designed for Vancouver.
Proposed for a site on Southeast Marine Dr., the design featured windmills on the roof and natural light. The plans for this facility are quite interesting, and can be found in the appendix (around page 30) of the City proposal report found here: http://www.city.vancouver.bc.ca/ctyclerk/cclerk/20050614/documents/ph2.pdf

The message that this sends out to future investment in this city could not be a worse one. We will not fully feel the damage done by this decision for years to come, when the current council members will likely no longer be accountable. Instead of making it personal, the council should have worked with Wal Mart to develop a plan that made sense economically. They have totally overstepped their authority on this one.

And FYI, I am not an advocate of giant corporate entities like Wal Mart. I hate the fuckers. But this application was significant in changing the way they look and do business, and for nothing but positive reasons that could have become a precedent to future facilities around the world, benefitting both the environment and the people they employ.

I happen to agree with that councilor. Wallmart has shown itself to be entirely irresponsible with regards to the community.
Besides, does Vancouver really need another shopping mall?

Got it the most successfull retailer in the world a blight???? Makes a lot of sense. This store if successfull would of resulted in the company investing 1 billion in Canadfian development alone!

Because your assumption is wrong. Not everyone hates Wal Mart. The corporate predator still rakes in loads of customers and tons of money because of advertising and for the items people are usually looking for are cheapre than those in other stores. That's Wal Mart's little catch. They only discount a small percentage of their overall stock. The great remainder is the same price or even more than in other stores. Venture is a very educational TV program!

I dislike Wal Mart and refuse to shop there because half of the top ten richest people in the US are from the Walton family which started Wal-Mart. I guess a small farm and a lumber operation just wasn't in the cards for these Waltons! Anyhow Wal-Mart pays low wages and for the most part its staff is made up of part-timers.

Instead of Wal-Mart, I go to Zellers. At least the employees are unionized there.

Wal-Mart is Mall-Wart for so many reasons. Profit there is from concentration of the buying dollar into their store, eliminate competition by predatory pricing and then edge up once it is gone, pay low wages and expect additional unpaid hours, buy goods from child-labour and poverty-wage countries, and drive suppliers' margins so thin they barely survive, and so on and so on....

Lost in the shuffle was council's rejection of a proposed Canadian Tire on Marine Drive, despite having already approved one for Grandview Highway. City staff recommended both projects.
Ironically, not more than a kilometer away from the proposed Wal Mart and Cdn. Tire store sites is a massive Great Canadian Superstore.
Go figure...

Typical socialist council, notice that the mayor voted for, knowing full well it would be defeated but putting out the appearence that he is pro development.
So much for free enterprise, when the taxes stop flowing and the hoards still want all their free goodies, the chickens will be home to roost, see the European model, fucking backrupt union,10% ui in France, people don't want to work in Germany and just about everything is subsidized. The reason Canada seems to do so well is the cheap $, and high taxes we all know as soon as the buck goes to 90c, its over for the Fed and its programs,ui will climb and tax rev will drop...its happened before.

Wal-Mart truly sucks---good for Vancouver for finally telling them to get lost. They have driven manufacturing industries out of North America (and money into the pockets of corrupt Chinese bureaucrats), and driven retailers that actually pay living wages into bankruptcy. We buy shit from them to save a couple pennies on bathmats and cut our own throats in our haste to save those few cents.

Global buying will only benefit the rich until decent employment standards are accepted in China and the countries making the crap we buy.

Boycott Wal-Mart and send them back to Arkansas! (and any other big box stores that copy their practices).

I refuse to darken the doors of a Wal-Mart unless absolutely necessary. Most of the products they carry is dime store crap anyway. I buy my cheap knick-knacks from Zellers, and everything else from the Bay, London Drugs, street markets, and the local mom-and-pop places.

Could you identify the architect?
Thanks.
Peter Busby

http://www.busby.ca/

At least they used a Canadian architect eh...

Interestingly enough, this same architect got fucked over on another Vancouver project, One Wall Centre.
http://www.busby.ca/9608wall/index.htm
After having been given the building permit and months into the project, the city made him change the glass 1/2 way up the tower because they thought it was too dark. This after Busby had submitted exact samples of the glass for approval prior to the start of construction as part of the permit requirements, and received approval from the same people that subsequently made him change it because they didn't like it. No, that was not intentional on the architects part to make the tower look so fucked up. :(
