Paul Volcker, an American economist and former Chairman of the Federal Reserve under Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, is currently chairman of the newly formed Economic Recovery Advisory Board under President Barack Obama.

On Friday he said that the global economy may be deteriorating even faster than it did during the Great Depression and made the frank admission that, "you know, even the experts don't quite know what is going on".

See his speech here.

Which is basically true. So far the best estimates are the we (we being the G7) will contract by between 2-6% of GDP for 2009 and have positive growth in 2010. Of the G7 by most accounts, Canada will be the least affected. Having said that it appears the eastern European banking industry is know under severe distress, and much of their loans were lend by western European banks, so who knows how that's going to unfold.
