Video activism for street prostitution?

I guess at first I didn't understand the John.tv crew's motives. I thought that they were intruding on people who were trying to have a good time (and in a sense they are?). But, I just read this faq post which cleared things up for me. Now, I'm not sure I can hate this. It is an intrusive form of activism. However, I agree with some of his morals as stated in the faq post, particularly this:

"In short, JohnTV doesn't concern itself with prostitution that is 100% consensual, conducted completely behind closed doors and/or is not part of an organized criminal effort.

With that in mind, the ‘who are you trying to protect’ should be pretty obvious;

1. The women who are being victimized - Girls that range in age from 12 to 60-years-old, who are exploited by pimps that often come in the form of a boyfriend or even a relative.
2. The individuals and families living in communities where this criminal activity is occurring.
3. The businesses who lose legitimate customers because of the presence of street prostitutes, pimps and the criminal element they often attract.
4. The family members of those lost to prostitution.
5. The wives of the ‘Johns’ who put so much at risk when patronizing women engaged in this sort of prostitution."

The fourth one is a bit questionable. In a world where prostitution is made illegal, some women who are comfortable with being prostitutes would end up being forced on to the street... right?
The fifth one is a bit tough for me to reconcile. I am not married and I'm against infidelity. But, I understand why a some married men see SPs. Also, if a man is cheating on his wife with whoever, it isn't their right to interfere.

Anyways, I guess I just wanted to know what other perbites think of this, SP and hobbyist alike.

There isn't a good motivation....it is simply shock entertainment, nothing else. The "motives" are used as a cover for how sleazy his activities are to rationalize it.

I take courses at the university downtown and people are always going around and around looking for parking.

It is also an area with lots of street activity. He had planned to come here to film. How does he distinguish between people looking for a spot and punters? And he does act as judge and jury...ruining someone's life for their own good is bullshit. More like making money off other people's misery.

He never came anyway. He was warned the local street gangs would probably kill him. So he chickened out. No problem screwing someone over as long as he isn't at risk himself. Very brave. Not.

I have watched some of his shows in the past and I am not sure I really buy what he is saying. There are pros and cons to this, but destroying people's lives by exposing them in such a way and lining your own pocket with proceeds from turning it into a TV show just doesn't sit well with me.

One can argue that the "John", takes that risk by engaging in such activities, but at the same time I think most of us here realize that some men are just plain deprived at home and I personally don't think that a man should just have to live with never having sex anymore. I have a friend who doesn't poon, but he does cheat when the opportunity presents with someone he has made contact with in his personal life. The woman he lives with, just NEVER has sex with him, but he says that she is a very nice person, she just doesn't like sex.

I wouldn't say partaking in such sexual activities in public is the right way to go about it, but do we even know if in the locations this video activism is happening, has a place like Perb, Craigslist, etc to go to find an SP?
Good point. That's the gray area I was talking about. It seems like in some relationships sex just stops happening for whatever reason. And I'm sure one could argue that they should just sort out their marriage. But that's still too broad a stroke, and all marriages are different and complicated. Also, this takes place in Oklahoma city. I'm sure they have craigslist but he has mentioned that he doesn't bother with the consensual behind closed doors prostitution. Just outdoor, criminal, human trafficking type stuff.

Yep, just another version of web sites like "The D**ty" with the same type of sleazeball running it.
I guess that was what initially bothered me. Judgmental people who don't understand other peoples lifestyles. It is questionable to take the law into your own hands and ruin people's lives in this way, when the only thing that motivates you is a moral system that not everybody agrees with.

Craigslist in the United States doesn't work the same way it does here in Canada either.... even ads for just renting an apartment require payment to post. Prostitution is illegal in the United States too and you won't be able to post ads in therapeutic like you do here.
actually, if you go to craigslist and type in any big u.s. city name, then go to therapeutic services and/or casual encounters, you'll find the ads aren't much different than they are here

there just aren't enough police to go around to enforce the prostitution laws down there. and there won't be here either. until it's election time, then the politicians will tell the police to get out there and make some john (oops i mean, trafficking) arrests, and they will, then it will die down again for a few more years... just like in the u.s.

very typical of the prohibitionists to pretty up their sleazy tactics by pretending they are out there to prevent trafficking when they are just a bunch of self righteous blowhards who don't believe anybody should be having sex the way they think it should happen. Married couples, in the dark, under the sheets, the husband on top and for no other reason that trying to make babies. These asswipes make me want to get violent

I'm no fan of street sex and don't want it in my community, but this guy is a total douche.

His justifications are just that - justifications, and they don't add up.

He says he's been doing this for 17 years, so obviously it doesn't have much effect and the prostitutes haven't seemed to have hurt businesses on Robinson.

If he's concerned about the poor exploited girls, whats he doing to help? Taking their business away while making money off them himself doesn't seem very helpful tome.

If he's so worried about the violent pimps, why isn't he going after them and photographing them? Going after a scared guy and a defenceless girl caught by surprise is gutless. Ruing their lives by publicly filming them is abhorrent. I'd like to see someone who lost a job or more sue him for all his sleazy profits.
