City of Vancouver trying to change the March for Murdered and Missing Womento make way for Olympics
http://www.petitiononline.com/feb14/petition.html

It has been brought to our attention that the City of Vancouver, Olympicofficials, and the Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit are trying tochange the historic Feb 14, 2010, March for Murdered and Missing Women inorder to ensure 'flow of Olympic traffic' down Hastings Street. As residents of the DTES and supporters of the Memorial March, we completelyoppose any change in date, time, or route of the Memorial March. This Marchhas been happening for 18 years to honour our sisters who die each year dueto the violence of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual abuse. It issomething far more significant and sacred than the Olympic Games, which hasalready increased poverty, homelessness, and policing in our neighbourhood. The government is spending billions on a circus, while putting people aside.

We, the women in the Downtown Eastside and our supporters, demand that: . There be no attempts to change or control our Feb 14th Memorial March .Not a single person be forcibly removed, evicted, or displaced from theirhomes in the Downtown Eastside and any other community due to the Olympics.

March anyway, no matter what they say. It's not like we'll have the Olympics again in the near future, but violence against Women is an ongoing issue. Besides, if the march is big enough, they won't have room to arrest everybody anyway, plus the optics would suck big time for Vancouver.

Protest!!!

Every group and organization should be lobbying in this province to express their freedoms no matter what time of year and what is going on:mad. Personally, I would like to see a Provincial Day of Protest by the 55%(although I am sure that number has increased since the May election) plus population that did not vote for Gordon Campbell and his Un-Liberals.:mad:

it seems we will be....i am not in control of this event and some of the first nations women, like bernie williams, hate me. i represent everything they are against as far as decrim and they yell and scream at me everywhere i go...weird they think attacking a woman to save women is ok.....

anyway, they have been attacking me in the meida for about 2 years, van courier article author is part of their crew...

i signed petition but will not be marching, so weird they are marching for missing and murdered women most of whom were sex workers but seem to hate sex workers. i can't expose myself to them, it sucks me dry...takes weeks to feel normal again after being attacked by feminazis...

in spite of who organizers are, i can't believe the C of V would do this and i encouraage everyone to at least sign. event is very empowering too, go if you can ...it's 1000's of people....so cool...i cried my first time....

It's pretty obvious to me that Vanoc wants the world to think of Vancouver as the town where nobody gets raped or murdered and of course everyone here has a job, a beautiful home and a college education. We also hate cars and prefer to walk or bicycle to work.

Susi, I think their anger is more personal for them than just you representing everything they are against. They are desperately trying to believe that they were and are victims without any power, choice or responsibility. When you present yourself as a person with power, choice and responsibility you threaten their self-image. You are suggesting that they are in some way or part responsible for their own missfortune while they want all the blame placed elsewhere.

The sad thing for them is that they can only change the things they accept responsibility for. They do not want to accept any responsibility and this will make it difficult or impossible for them to make changes, "save women" or deal with their own past.

City confirms support for Women's Memorial March in February 2010

The City of Vancouver, the Vancouver Police Department, community and other partners want to confirm their support for the annual Women's Memorial March and assure it will occur on the same date, time and route as in past years.

The march is planned for February 14, 2010 to proceed through Downtown
Eastside neighbourhoods.

The Women's Memorial March is coordinated by the Downtown Eastside Women's Centre to take place every year on February 14 to honour the lives of missing and murdered women from the Downtown Eastside.

While next year's event will occur as it does every year, it is taking place
during the Olympic Winter Games period. The Vancouver Police Department and partners will work with organizers to ensure the march can operate safely
during busy traffic conditions predicted for downtown Vancouver. During the
Games, significantly more buses, vehicles and pedestrians will be in the
downtown area.

Over the past months, City staff and partners have been meeting with groups
to determine the best way for events and festivals to be staged during the
busy Games period.
