VANCOUVER - Vancouver's natural assets and temperate climate make it one of the best cities in the world in which to live, a new survey says.

The annual quality of life survey released by Mercer Human Resource Consulting placed Vancouver third out of 215 cities, the same as last year.

Vancouver Vancouver's climate helped it rise in the rankings, according to Mercer spokeswoman Danielle Bushen.

The only two places that beat the West Coast city were Zurich and Geneva in Switzerland.

Toronto edged up one spot in the rankings to 14th place. Montreal was 22nd, up two spots, Ottawa was unchanged in 20th spot, and Calgary was 25th, down one.

All five Canadian cities in the survey were praised for their relatively high levels of "personal safety and security" and for being in a politically stable country.

Baghdad was deemed the world's least secure city because of ongoing civil unrest and threats of attack in the city. Luxembourg was ranked the top city for personal safety and security.

In the United States, the highest-rated cities were Honolulu and San Francisco, tied in 25th spot with Calgary, while Houston, in 68th spot, ranked

Huh...where's Halifax?! I guess these people aren’t as worldly as you and obviously lack the intellect to make such a claim.

If you think Vancouver is pricey you haven't been to the land of Rolex and Toblerone. And if you are homesick they have junkies in their parks too!

Toronto edged out Montreal, Ottawa and Calgary as a better place to live? I don't know about that one. I would rather live in Winnipeg than TO. :D

If you have been to Switzerland, you will see why it is always ranked #1. It is almost like a fairly tale city (clean, little traffic, no pollution and so scenic).

I am surprised Toronto beat out Calgary. Toronto rocks in terms of entertainment, excitment and being such a dynamic city, but living there long term is another thing.

Why are you all getting upset about an article that was written in 2005???

And who is it that is really concerned about this anyway. If you like where you live, enjoy it. If you don't find somewhere else.

Aren't there better things to be doing in this great Ausgust weather than getting you knickers in a twist over a one year old newspaper report??

Didn't some fool...

have an earlier thread about Vancouver being a shithole. I can't remember who it was but I do recall it being about the dumbest thing I ever read on Perb.

That's because most of them are originally from Wimper-Peg:p .

I hate Toronto, but Winnipeg is unique. I never see people pushing shopping carts to bring their groceries home in any other city.

Nice trees all over the 'Peg. They seem to be outlawed anywhere else in any downtown area.

I don't know why people "hate" other cities. People from all big cities seem to be the same. A city is really what you make of it. Do people judge a city by its landscape only? I dont think thats how the article and rankings were judged alone on. its like an sp that looks amazing but doesn't perform well. I love the tri-city area that I live in but can't stand Vancouver. well not the city but the die hards that crame all its vancouverness down your throat. I live half hour away and have all the mountain views it does plus I have some space from my neighbors and not nearly as many used needles or condom wrappers tossed onto my lawn. Suburbs rock and the big cities suck

I think your confussing Hamilton with Toronto. Toronto has cleaned up alot, unless you`ve been going to the welfare highrise complexes. When people have there rent paid for them they rarely care what there places look like.

In Winnipeg your more likely to see people pushing shopping carts, that are full of empty beer bottles, on the way to the vendor to cash them in.:D
