Having 'issues' with the Peoples Republic of China does not make one racist. It's a vile, awful government that deserves to be overthrown and it's leaders dragged through the streets and executed.

And the fresh off the boat older Chinese immigrants are pretty unlikeable. They are rude, racist (pot meet kettle), show no interest in assimilating, and I suspect their 'loyalty' to Canada is not even skin deep.

Unless one's experienced racism themselves, one can't really comment or understand how it feels, especially if their skin is white. Despite the strides we've made, one would be in denial if they said racism doesn't exist or did not see that we still live in a Caucasian male dominated society. I've been called gwai-lo, does that count? Are you honestly bringing up some meaningless name calling? Call me a cracker and I will laugh in your face, not take offence. As long as different groups are forced by the government to live together, whatever those differences are, that will exist. If you weren't here, the blondes would be picking on the redheads (which happens anyway) and the lefties would "rise up" against right-handed domination! The important issue for 'minorities,' some of whom are close to majority status at this point, is how the gov't and corporate world treats you and I don't think you could find a better situation than you have here. The gov't and corporations actively hire simply based on race (i.e. Whites need not apply) and continually espouse the benefits of "diversity" in their official literature and hiring practices, and if they don't hire enough "minorities" they likely face lawsuits and worse.

Give me a fucking break.

Seriously... they are the most racist people. They have no right to come over here and level such accusations. Hells bells, they even behave in a disrespectful fashion to Canadian families of Chinese descent... people who have been here for generations, regardless of where their family originated. Maybe we should start to think about keeping racists out of Canada, stop them at the border (and no, I'm not just meaning Chinese, I mean everyone).

I'm not disagreeing with what I'm hearing. Don't get me wrong, I have a diversity of friends of different colours, religion and orientation. Realistically and unfortunatley, everyone has some degree of predjudice towards others, myself included. What's even more sad is when people look down on their own race. Even though I've experienced racism in my life, I'm not racist or negative towards the colour or the people who treated me that way, because I know not everyone is like that. Like some, I think I used to be more idealistic when I was younger, but I'm certainly not in denial of how the world and old boys network can be. You don't have to look far in history to discover the origins of racism, an ideology that one race is superior to other inferior slave races.

Having read your posts on this subject, I would have to say I probably completely agree with you on your world view. Unfortunately, the way you're expressing it does not do that sort of viewpoint any justice. It's often difficult, especially with the short attention spans and reactionary or simpleton behaviours of people online, to further even a slightly more nuanced and far more realistic understanding of how such a thing as racism actually exists in this world. Instead, people run roughshod with simple platitudes such as, "asians are the most racist people I know". Even bruce44 when he said, "white people have to put up with racists colored people all the time. But they can't say anything back because they will be considered racist", would be considered one of the more enlightened comments still falls far short of the mark and verging on political correctness and all the distortions on truth that brings.

Well there definitely is a strong stream of anti-China bashing in the last few years. Whether or not it results in people becoming racist against Chinese is another matter, but one must not overlook that there are definitely a significant section of people in North America who are motivated by racism. Some are so stupid that they actually believed that we were in danger of having Shariah law take over our justice system - as I recalled seeing demonstrations by people in Kelowna.

People fear China because the US media in particular has been beating the drums set by the US government about China as a potential competitor to it. A shift of economic (and military) power is towards the east is definitely going to make people uneasy, but let's not forget that that's what it is and a change of life is inevitable; you'd be considered lucky to have stability and the seat of power your whole life.

From a historic perspective, many academics and historians alike will tell you that the current situation is not so much the decline of the West, but instead the resurgence of the East. It stands to reason that in terms of sheer human resources and material resources, that the bulk of that has always existed in the Orient, and that western imperialism was just an aberration of history because exploitation of the rest of the world was never to be permanent. Even the United States, after exhausting the Soviet Union economically, now completely depletes itself in trying to be the last hegemonic western power; it was unrealistic to think it could ever keep up with natural world progress.

Read a newspaper or online news lately? While Chinese people are nothing to worry about, the country of China most certainly is. They are actively engaged in a covert (not so covert anymore) cyber war, with hundreds of thousands of trained hackers attacking western countries infrastructure and corporations. These are not rumors or conjecture, but established facts. Why the world hasn't made a bigger deal of it is a sign of the economic and military power they wield. That's not racism, or a generalization, it's a fact. The media has reported it, as in the case of the NY Times and Washington Post - and those same hackers set to attacking their websites for weeks on end until the stories stopped. While there may be some fear-mongering, that doesn't mean there isn't a boogeyman. The Government over there doesn't worry about equality, human rights, fairness or due process and they truly feel they are entitled to whatever the fuck they feel like.

If you think corporate espionage and hacking are a one way street from China then you should get out more...
