In Lust Mostly
I was in Montreal last week and decided to go have a smoked meat sandwich at Dunn's.

Two Heinekens, Sandwich and 20% tip = $42. Great meal and service too.

IIRC last time I was in Montreal < 5 years ago it cost about $28 for the same thing....

Now I know Vancouver is an expensive place but that is a bit high IMHO.

Why is Vancouver so expensive compare with other Canadian cities? Given that Vancouver is not the financial capital of Canada.

I thought a nation's most expensive city should be located at its financial capital, just like Manhanttan is most expensive in US, Sydney is most expensive is Australia, and London is most expensive in UK.

Broke Bastard, you're a broke bastard! You can't even afford to live in a cardboard box! (Love that name, by the way!!)

Here, take the Vancouver housing test to see what $1M can get you:

Funny enough I was looking at property in the Fraser Valley online last night and for what you get in Vancouver for 1 million you get a hell of a lot more bang for your bucks 1 1/2 hours away with nearly the same weather...for 1.4 million (that is what they want.....does not mean you pay it) I saw a mansion that was incredible...massive SQ footage and each of the 3 or 4 bedrooms had it's own bathroom and the master bedroom was palatial...add in the massive gourmet kitchen that was designed for entertaining as well as the formal dining room/living room/media room as well as all the storage + the basement and massive attached triple garage...not to mention the decks and verandas....total fricken LUXURY and jack squat for property taxes....and this place is on 24 acres of land....24 fricken acres of land that are yours to do with as you please....9 hole golf course...or maybe a go cart track around the perimiter with a bunch of curves and a few straight stretches as well as a couple chicanes to make things interesting.

For 400 grand more you get total luxury and a lot of land compared to a crappy house in Vancouver.

The traffic! Hard to enjoy a nice stick shift car in your city. I would have to switch to a automaticl!

Vancouver
the Greater Toronto is so large and so well served with transportation options that a person doesn't have to live in the most expensive areas. Greater Vancouver is actually tightly bound by geography and transportation options. That makes it so that despite the fact Greater Toronto has 7 million people compared to 2 million in Greater Vancouver, there is less land available in Greater Vancouver. Throw in pretty decent weather, pretty decent views, quick access to Asia and a pretty tolerant population and Greater Vancouver has difficulty finding available land and has difficulty changing zoning rapidly enough to accommodate it's population.
Good explanation.

there is a much larger variety available.
...of everything.
