Vancouver is 'best place to live'

Vancouver is the world's best place to live, a survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has found.

Vancouver is the world's best place to live, a survey by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has found.
The EIU ranked 127 cities in terms of personal risk, infrastructure and the availability of goods and services.

All the cities that fell into the top "liveability" bracket were based in Canada, Australia and Western Europe.

The worst places were Algiers in Algeria, and Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea because "many aspects of daily life present challenges", the EIU said.

Safe havens?

Canadian cities scored well, as did Austria's Vienna and Switzerland's Geneva, because they are not seen as targets for terror attacks.

The main uncertainty for people living in the those cities are climate-related, the EIU said.

"In the current global political climate, it is no surprise that the most desirable destinations are those with the lower perceived threat of terrorism," said Jon Copestake, editor of the EIU report.

The survey has produced a mixed picture of the world's cities. London was ranked in the 10th group, on a par with Dublin and Los Angeles, but one place below Manchester, four behind Berlin, five lower than Tokyo, and six off Helsinki, Frankfurt and Stockholm.
In Latin America, "no city manages to present ideal living conditions, neither do any fall into the category where extreme difficulties are faced", the EIU said.

Montevideo in Uruguay, Santiago in Chile and Buenos Aires in Argentina offer the region's best conditions. Bogota in Colombia and Caracas in Venezuela score the least favourably.

In Asia, cities in Japan, South Korea, Singapore, China and Taiwan all score well, as do Australia's main hubs.

Africa and the Middle East fare less well, with the EIU citing concerns about terror attacks, and economic and political instability.

Some of the worst performing cities include Harare in Zimbabwe and Lagos in Nigeria.

Heres this years top ten cities to live in according to the Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU):

1) Vancouver
2) Melbourne
3) Vienna
4) Geneva
5) Perth
6) Adelaide
7) Sydney
8) Zurich
9) Toronto
10) Calgary

Heres this years bottom ten cities to live in according to the Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU):

1) Tehran
2) Douala
3) Harare
4) Abidjan
5) Phnom Penh
6) Lagos
7) Karachi
8) Dhaka
9) Algiers
10) Port Moresby

I suspect a number of cities were not even researched: I don't see Mogadishu or Kandahar either....
yeah i think your right. i'm guessing they just assumed that some cities like the ones you just mentioned are "write offs". I mean i'm pretty sure life in tehran is better then life in those two cities.

I believe there is a reason why some of those cities such as Baghdad is not included in the bottom ten. They only compare the infrastructure of the cities. Although war has put Baghdad in ruins and ashes but Baghdad still had a slightly better infrastructure than most of those bottom ten and therefore was not listed.

I find that hard to believe, Calgary was below Toronto. Calgary is a overwhelming better city to live in than Toronto. After all, Calgary doen't have as much air smog as Toronto. You have those beautiful mountains close to Calgary and what does Toronto?

Sorry apple juice. I shouldn't have been so harsh. When I went to Calgary 15 years ago people were very friendly and it had the charm of a small city on the verge of becoming a great city. This year I go there and I found the people to be so rude. They totally changed. I went up to visit some friends in Edmonton and all of there new friends had an attitude. Like the thought I was second class because I live in Vancouvers suburbs. And they kept going on about how great Alberta was. All I asked them back was if you didn't have the oil related jobs, what would make Alberta so great? They responded there job market is booming. Aren't most of our markets booming? And isn't Albertas market so great because of the income Albert has gained from these oil reserves which in turn has eliminated there debt which allows lower corporate taxes. What ever happend to the good old beef farmers?

Sadly Akitasam is right, the oil thing has really gone to some people's heads. The oil didn't get put there as a reward for their virtue-it was just a fortuitous accident of geography.

Most of the rude and obnoxious neo-wealthy in Alberta are not local Albertans anyway. Although there are more Torontonian-wannabes in Cowtown.

Was them thare mad cows what did 'em.

Even with all that oil, an NDP government, like we unfortunately have here in Manitoba, would have Alberta broke in one year. Alberta does have oil, but it also has a non socialist government that does an excellent job of managing the province. Trudeau did his best to try and bring Alberta to its knees, and obviously he failed.

Most people in the other provinces are jealous about Alberta's wealth and economic boom.
Wolverine you are right, most of the rude and obnoxious people here in Alberta are original from Toronto/southern Ontario or Montreal.
I original from Ontario and I have been living here in Alberta since 1979. My job involves me traveling throughout Alberta. I found only warm and friendly all over this province of Alberta including large cities and small rural areas (Carbon and Fort MacLeod).
Vancouver is great place but I perfer to live here near the mountains in Alberta and in the winter months we have plenty of sunshine and snow.

Yeah good one. Old Ralphie has wasted more money than most NDP governments could even imagine. The state of affairs in Alberta is in spite of Klein not because of him there is just so much money rolling in that even he can't screw it up. Of course that doesn't mean I don't think the NDP aren't worthless here in Manitoba.

When the NDP government was in prower in Ontario, their first budget they predicted a deficit and the following year it was even larger than they had original predicted. NDP governments are not good for any province or this country.

I don't really enjoy Calgary either. It's so cold in winter, so hot in summer, plus lots of rednecks.
